Community How Season 2s Paintball Episode Led The Russos To The MCU

Anthony and Joe Russo could accredit their time working for Marvel Studios to their bevy of work on the NBC comedy series, Community. The Russo Brothers, as they’re popularly known, directed some of the most successful installments within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thay may have not been the case if they hadn’t worked on Community. In fact, a certain season 2 paintball episode paved the way for the brothers’ first gig with Marvel.

The Russo Brothers got their start in 1997 with an unreleased film titled Pieces. The duo served as the producers, writers, and directors of the project. They then worked as the co-directors on Welcome to Collinwood and You, Me and Dupree in addition to notable work on Arrested Development, LAX, and What About Brian. In 2009, the Russo Brothers directed the pilot of Dan Harmon’s new comedy, Community. They then took turns directing various episodes throughout four of the show’s six seasons.

The most meaningful episode within their career on Community came during the season 2 finale, “For a Few Paintballs More.” After the success of the season 1 episode which featured a game of paintball played on campus, Community decided to create a few sequels. Season 2 ended with a two-part special that featured another campus-wide paintball game with $100,000 up for grabs. Both parts of the finale were directed by Joe Russo and the episodes were noticeably inspired by Spaghetti Westerns and popular and genre films like the Star Wars franchise. Marvel Studios became aware of the Russo Brothers’ work on Community and it directly led to their hiring to take the helm of Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Anthony & Joe Russo Didn’t Even Apply For A Job With Marvel

Marvel Studios CEO, Kevin Feige, was a big fan of Community so he was well aware of the Russo Brothers’ work on the series. Feige noted “For a Few Paintballs More” as the episode that convinced Marvel to reach out to the filmmaking duo for The Winter Soldier. The studio enjoyed the genre-spoofing work of Joe and how both brothers had an eye for action on the TV series. It’s no question that the show’s paintball episodes are heavy in action sequences. After contacting the Russo Brothers, the pair met with Marvel for about two months before the gig was a done deal.

Marvel Studios became enamored by the Russo Brothers and the duo was brought back for Captain America: Civil War two years later. They then directed two more installments in the MCU, including Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, two of the biggest installments thus far. The Russo Brothers certainly didn’t forget their roots with Community since they invited many of the show’s stars to cameo in their movies. Community also repaid the favor by including multiple Marvel-related gags to poke fun at two of their most prominent directors.
