Confirmed Nebula Didn’t Know About Soul Stone Exchange In Endgame

It has been confirmed that Nebula did not know the exchange cost to acquire the Soul Stone on Vormir in Avengers: Endgame. As Marvel Studios built up to the Avengers and Thanos finally meeting, the whereabouts of the Infinity Stones became incredibly important. Four of the six were introduced ahead of Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Doctor Strange then introducing the Time Stone. Surprisingly, the location of the Soul Stone – the last one to be revealed – was held all the way until Avengers: Infinity War.

Gamora revealed that she knew the Soul Stone resided on Vormir and was forced by Thanos to take him there so he would stop torturing Nebula. It didn’t take long to show that Vormir and the Soul Stone required more than the other Infinity Stones for someone to wield it. Red Skull, the guardian of the stone, revealed that the soul of a loved one had to be exchanged to obtain the Soul Stone. Thanos sacrificed Gamora, his favorite daughter, to get the stone in Avengers: Infinity War. While Nebula later learned and shared what Thanos did, many have wondered what exactly she knew.

This topic became a bigger one as the time travel, Infinity Stone heist plot of Avengers: Endgame unfolded. The film had Black Widow and Hawkeye go to Vormir to obtain the Soul Stone for themselves. It wasn’t long before fans started to question this decision, as many thought Nebula would’ve shared the cost of getting the stone. She said in Infinity War that Thanos went to Vormir with Gamora and left with the stone, which led many to assume she pieced together the exchange that was made. However, the commentary track on Avengers: Endgame has directors Anthony and Joe Russo and writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely confirm that is not the case.

McFeely: Nebula doesn’t know about the exchange that’s required at Vormir, no one knows. No one knows other than the people that were there. She only knows her sister didn’t come back.

Joe Russo: She knows her sister went there with her father, and her sister didn’t come back and he left with the stone. So, only assumptions can be made about what happens on that planet, but who knows. She could’ve tried to stop him and he murdered her. We have no idea.

Anthony Russo: He could’ve murdered her because he got what he wanted.

Joe Russo: The only one who really knows is Red Skull.

The confusion over what Nebula did or did not know was warranted, but this is the only acceptable explanation. If she truly did understand that Thanos had to sacrifice Gamora to get the stone, then she would know that either Hawkeye or Black Widow wouldn’t return. Nebula may have been a daughter of Thanos and villain in the past, but that is certainly not who she is during Avengers: Endgame. She would’ve shared knowledge of this everlasting exchange with the team if she had it, and probably would’ve seen many of the team members volunteer to be the one to die.

While no one besides Red Skull knew the cost of getting the Soul Stone ahead of Avengers: Infinity War, that is certainly not the case anymore. The entire Avengers roster knows the cost, as do the Guardians of the Galaxy. Since the Soul Stone and the rest of the Infinity Stones have all been reduced to atoms in the main MCU timeline, there will be no need for further sacrifices. But, the lack of the stone could also see people venture to Vormir to try and get back the souls that were lost, whether it’s Gamora, Black Widow, or someone else from long ago. We’ll just have to wait and see what comes next for Vormir after Avengers: Endgame.
