Although many assumed it to be an April fools joke, it appears that Cooking Simulator really will be receiving a post-apocalyptic expansion titled Cooking Simulator – Shelter. The aptly-named Cooking Simulator, which launched in 2019, puts players in the role of a chef and tasks them with completing recipes in order to satisfy customers. The game is similar to other simulation titles such as Surgeon Simulator and Microsoft Flight Simulator.

Upon release, Cooking Simulator was praised for its hectic and also intense gameplay; the title’s controls caused players to struggle to match the dexterity of a real-life chef. The fun of the game comes from fumbling around the kitchen, and the game’s scoring system is forgiving enough to still allow for some level of success after the mayhem. Unfortunately, this chaotic intensity means that players only found the game fun in short bursts. An extended period of time in the kitchen quickly became irritating for some players, holding Cooking Simulator back from the success of other chaotic cooking games, such as Overcooked.

Developer Big Cheese Studio revealed a post-apocalyptic expansion for Cooking Simulator on April 1st, but it appears that the expansion is more than a mere April Fool’s joke. Cooking Simulator – Shelter has actually received its own Steam page, suggesting that this post-catastrophic culinary experience will actually see the light of day. The expansion’s trailer suggests that players will be tasked with cooking Mad Max meals using ingredients like home-grown mushrooms. It is suggested that players will be cooking meals to trade with local settlers in order to survive the wasteland.

With the world still largely in quarantine due to the COVID-19 pandemic, simulation games are a great way for gamers to experience some real-world activities. One recently-released simulation game, titled Definitely Not Fried Chicken, allows players to run both a drug empire and its fried chicken restaurant front business. The game takes heavy inspiration from the legendary AMC series Breaking Bad, particularly the character of Gus Fring and his Los Pollos Hermanos chicken franchise. Another highly successful simulation game is Microsoft Flight Simulator, which continues to receive updates after its release in August of last year. The game’s next content update, which will add additional landmarks to France and the Benelux regions, is scheduled to release on April 15.

Simulation games are a great way for gamers to experience realistic activities that they may not otherwise be involved with. Cooking Simulator requires dexterity and skill, but it is forgiving enough that anyone can have fun playing even if they do not perform perfectly. Cooking Simulator – Shelter seems like an obvious April Fool’s joke, but developer Big Cheese Studio seems to actually be moving ahead with this unorthodox idea. Time will tell whether this expansion ever really arrives, and exactly what it will look like.
