Cops Live PD Pulled From TV Amid Black Lives Matter Protests

The law enforcement based reality TV shows Cops and Live PD have been pulled by their respective TV networks Paramount Network and A&E amidst the Black Lives Matter protests. Cops, which shows various real-life police activities, debuted in 1989 on FOX. The reality show is inspired by cinéma vérité, as it relies on the commentary of the various police officers being documented to provide the narrative for the show. Live PD is a more recent reality show, hosted by Dan Abrams, highlighting how policing is done in America. It debuted in 2016 on A&E, and has rating highs of 2.4 million. Live PD returned with season 4 in September 2019.

However, since the murder of George Floyd – a black man who died after a white police officer pinned him to the ground by placing his knee on Floyd’s neck – Black Lives Matter protests have been happening across America and the world. It’s even led to notable Hollywood names like John Boyega joining protests in London, while J.J. Abrams has pledged $10 million to support Black Lives Matter as well as various other anti-racist organizations. These recent events have also led to many companies delaying entertainment events due to it being deemed inappropriate to have things such as Ghostbusters Day be celebrated during this time. Now, Paramount and A&E have followed suit by pulling shows of their own.

Yesterday, Variety reported that A&E has opted not to air their new episodes of Live PD this Friday and Saturday, while also reporting that Paramount Network has delayed Monday’s launch of Cops season 33. Variety also mentions that A&E released a statement, writing that their decision to not air Live PD this weekend is, “Out of respect for the families of George Floyd and others who have lost their lives, in consultation with the departments we follow.” The report does also note that Paramount has not issued any comments regarding Cops, and in addition to removing it from Monday’s TV schedule, “the show is no longer mentioned anywhere on the channel’s website.”

Paramount and A&E have made the right moves by pulling or delaying Cops and Live PD, as people’s view of police activity has arguably never been lower than it is right now. In recent days, multiple videos have been shared on social media that depict police attacking peaceful protestors. Even stars like Cole Sprouse and John Cusack have highlighted aggressive police behavior during recent BLM protests. Clearly, airing two shows that document police activities in America is not a good idea at this time.

The BLM protests have also led to companies and artists further highlighting past projects that showcase black history, and the struggles the community has had to endure. Spike Lee posted a powerful video highlighting how his 1989 film Do The Right Thing is still relevant in today’s society, while Paramount Pictures has made the 2014 film Selma free for digital renting until the end of June. It’s clear that this is the type of content that needs pushing right now, but it will be interesting to see how long Paramount and A&E hold out with regards to not airing Cops and Live PD.
