Coronavirus Every Movie and TV Show Production Delayed

From The Little Mermaid to Stranger Things, here’s every single film and TV series production that’s been delayed or shut-down due to the coronavirus outbreak. The spread of the COVID-19 pandemic over the past few months has created a seismic impact on practically every area of everyday life. World governments have reacted in various ways to try and stave off the spread of the infection, from travel bans to curfews to entire shutdowns of cities. With experts advising an extended period of self-isolation for those who are able to do so, it’s no wonder that various industries are experiencing major social and economic instability. The entertainment world is but one example of that.

The first major signs of Hollywood’s fears over the coronavirus came when MGM made the unexpected decision to push back the release of the 25th Bond movie, No Time To Die, by an entire seven months. Other major releases followed, including Disney’s live-action remake of Mulan, set to premiere this month but now without a confirmed release date, and Fast & Furious 9, which audiences now won’t be able to watch until April 2021. Studios have decided that it is simply too risky to release these major titles in theaters when the audiences just aren’t there right now. With movie theaters closing in key locations such as France, China, and now the U.S., for the time being, it is likely that we will see record lows at the box office.

With government leaders now advising a near-total shutdown of daily life, the film and TV industries are following suit in order to keep themselves and their countless colleagues as safe as possible. This has taken the form of various productions shutting down for days and weeks at a time, on top of pushed back releases and the elimination of live studio audiences for various shows. Shutting down a major movie production even for one day can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, so a studio doing this for everything currently shooting for two weeks or more could lead to hundreds of millions of dollars in costs. Here are the movies and TV series that have faced production shut-downs due to coronavirus.

Elvis

Baz Luhrmann’s biopic of the legendary singer Elvis Presley is currently set for an Oscar season-friendly October 2021 release date. It certainly has all the markers of awards bait: A lavish musical biopic based on a pop culture icon with one of Hollywood’s most beloved actors, Tom Hanks, in a key supporting role. Production is taking place mostly in Australia, as is typical for a Luhrmann production, but after two months, shooting was halted since Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson tested positive for coronavirus.

The Batman

A bulk of the production for The Batman, DC’s latest movie starring the Dark Knight himself, has been taking place in the U.K., where the government’s advice on the coronavirus has been heavily criticized for its seemingly lackadaisical approach to dealing with the virus. Following the shutdown of Elvis, Warner Bros. made the decision to halt shooting on The Batman for at least two weeks. Most recently, Matt Reeves and the crew were working on a sound stage in London with plans to head to Liverpool, but a hiatus has been called instead.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has fully entered Phase 4 and one of the most anticipated titles of the upcoming arc is Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Shooting began in Australia earlier this year and was expected to continue in Los Angeles. As studios started halting production, Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton decided to have himself tested for coronavirus as a precaution because he recently became a father for the first time. As he awaited the results, Marvel suspended first unit production on the film with the intent to have second unit work continue, but the film is now in total shutdown. The movie is scheduled for a February 2021 release and that has not yet changed.

Jurassic World: Dominion

The third installment in the wildly profitable Jurassic World franchise, Jurassic World: Dominion, is set to include the return of Laura Dern’s Dr. Ellie Sattler and Sam Neill’s Dr. Alan Grant from the original series. Colin Trevorrow is also back as director. Principal photography began in February in British Columbia, Canada, with some shooting expected to take place in Hawaii and England’s Pinewood Studios. Universal made the decision to put Jurassic World 3 on hiatus last week, with executives deciding that it was the safest move possible for all involved. This isn’t the only movie that Universal has shut down production on. An untitled Billy Eichner rom-com and the sports drama Flint Strong also went on indefinite hiatus thanks to coronavirus.

After making the shock decision to pull Mulan from the release calendar mere weeks before its scheduled premiere, Disney is not wasting any more time in dealing with COVID-19. The majority of their live-action projects currently in production have been shut down, as well as some of their television titles. The Little Mermaid may be the most notable example of this, if only because of how highly anticipated it is with Disney fans. Shooting had not yet begun on the movie, but production still came to a halt in London, where most of the filming was set to take place. Other casualties of this shutdown include the Disney+ Home Alone reboot, Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley, and Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel. The hiatus has also led to delays on works that were in pre-production, including Peter Pan and Wendy and Shrunk. Disney has been quick to note that there have been no confirmed cases of coronavirus on their productions and that these are merely preventative measures.

The Matrix 4

It’s unclear whether that will have any impact on its May 2021 release date.

James Cameron’s long-gestating follow-up to 2009’s Avatar, Avatar 2 will be the first of four sequels to the former highest grossing movie of all time. The films have already endured a number of hold-ups so far for a variety of reasons, and now all the Avatar sequels face production delays due to coronavirus. They’re still on track for their respective release dates though, with the first arriving in December 2021, followed by 2023, 2025, and 2027.

This makes it the first production by the streaming service to be put on hiatus in the U.K. due to the coronavirus. Stranger Things

Hit series Stranger Things remains one of the undisputed jewels in Netflix’s lavish crown, with the series consistently pulling in some of the streaming service’s biggest responses and online hype. Stranger Things now faces a two-week shutdown due to coronavirus, right as the show films its fourth season. Filming for the fourth season began in February 2020 in Vilnius, Lithuania, with plans to resume shooting in the United States later. The new season has a tentative 2020 release, but nothing concrete yet and that very well could change if things continue as they are.

Netflix Live-Action Productions

The DC Universe is shut down across the board, from film to television, as Warner Bros. put all Arrowverse shows currently in production on hiatus due to safety concerns. WBTV suspended filming of all their Arrowverse shows, which include The Flash, Supergirl, and Batwoman. Supergirl is working on its season five finale. It’s unknown where the other shows are in terms of their schedule, but going by their typical calendars which wrap up production somewhere in late March/early April, it seems likely that they were all nearing the end of their respective seasons on some level.

Marvel’s Disney+ Shows

Coronavirus Every Movie and TV Show Production Delayed

Two TV shows no strangers to outbreaks, both The Walking Dead and Fear The Walking Dead are halting production due to the coronavirus. For The Walking Dead, this means production on season 11 will be delayed by a few weeks, though it ultimately shouldn’t have too much impact on its release. Fear The Walking Dead will likely fare worse, as it doesn’t yet have an air date for season 6, and could be delayed much longer.

Cable TV Shows
