Could Marvels New DARK AVENGERS Be Uniting in Ravencroft

The Ravencroft Institute for the Criminally Insane has received a new tenant in Karla Sofen AKA Moonstone, just one of the many villains at Ravencroft But not all the villains are inmates, now that Norman Osborn (the former Green Goblin) acting as one of Ravencroft’s consultants. Given that Osborn was once a member of the Dark Avengers alongside Moonstone, could the team of evil Avengers be making a comeback within the walls of Ravencroft?

The Dark Avengers originally appeared in the first issue of their self-titled series. After the events of Secret Invasion, Osborn had been elevated to the position of Director of SHIELD, which he re-branded HAMMER. The Dark Avengers consisted of several villains including Moonstone, Bullseye, and Scorpion — posing as Avengers mainstays Captain Marvel, Taskmaster and Spider-Man respectively, with Osborn himself as the team’s leader, Iron Patriot. The team ultimately came into conflict with the genuine articles, resulting in Osborn and his team’s fall. While Moonstone and Osborn’s Ravencroft connection is tenuous at best, the Institute is certainly poised to be a major setting within Marvel’s universe in the months to come.

Though SHIELD is no more, someone is interested in Ravencroft’s activities and has tasked Misty Knight to keep an eye on things. Nor would this be the first time Ravencroft writer Frank Tieri has detailed the exploits from a team of anti-heroes and supervillains, having led Weapon X, which focused on the mysterious research program responsible for the likes of Deadpool, Wolverine, and Sabretooth. Tieri’s Weapon X focused on a rotating cast of B-listers like Marrow and Agent X, taking the title to new heights. Because of that, Ravencroft’s own dark history and new residents are a natural fit for the writer — and the same would be true of a new take on the Dark Avengers.

The Dark Avengers are certainly overdue for a comeback (part of the reason that a Dark Avengers movie has been mentioned amid speculation for what comes next for the Avengers post-Endgame). With Wilson Fisk now Mayor of New York, a team of Dark Avengers would certainly have their hands full, no matter what side of the law they find themselves on a given day. Plus, Tieri has shown himself particularly adept at delivering all the betrayals and shocking moments fans would hope to see continue into a new incarnation.

Certainly, Moonstone and Norman Osborn alone are among the most devious of the Dark Avengers crew, and who they ally themselves with going forward could open a new field of possibilities for the baddest Avengers on the (cell) block. It’s still just a hope… but don’t say we didn’t warn you, either.
