New character posters for Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop showcase the live-action’s cast. Widely credited for popularizing the anime art form among Western audiences, the original Cowboy Bebop animated series premiered in 1998 and ran for 26 episodes. Although it’s been more than two decades since the show ended, it remains largely popular in syndication, and this is one of the reasons why Netflix is reimagining the show in a live-action format for modern audiences. Set to premiere on November 19, 2021, Cowboy Bebop is being developed by The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ AndrĂ© Nemec and written by Thor: Ragnarok screenwriter Christopher Yost, with Tomorrow Studios and original creators Sunrise Inc. producing.

The upcoming space western TV series is based in the year 2071, and it follows an incongruous group of bounty hunters as they travel through space on the titular ship, killing targets and chasing down notorious criminals. The show boasts a glittering roster of fan-favorite characters from the anime, with John Cho as Spike Spiegel, Mustafa Shakir as Jet Black, Daniella Pineda as Faye Valentine, Elena Satine as Julia, and Alex Hassell as Vicious. Recently, Cowboy Bebop’s official trailer showcased the comedic chemistry between the main characters, and now Netflix has offered another good look at the cast.

On Thursday, Cowboy Bebop’s official Twitter handle unveiled the posters for all of its major characters. The photos offer a glimpse at Faye, Jet Black, Julia, Vicious, and even Ein, Spike’s Pembroke Welsh Corgi played by dog actors Charlie & Harry. The images are all aesthetic close-up headshots that reveal the actors’ detailed makeup and transformation, but they leave out the costumes as they aren’t full-body pictures. Earlier, a similar character poster was also revealed for John Cho’s Spike Spiegel. Take a look at the pictures below:

As acknowledged earlier by Nemec, Cowboy Bebop isn’t trying to be a direct adaptation to the hit anime. Rather, the show expands the original’s universe while paying homage to its most revered aspects like its beloved characters, opening sequence, Japanese voice cast, and rapid-fire tone. Some celebrated arcs from the anime, including “The Ballad of Fallen Angels” and “Asteroid Blues” will also be explored in the upcoming series, and those will expectedly be handled very well given the great lengths the creative team has gone to authentically capture Cowboy Bebop’s essence.

Although the new character posters do not reveal any additional information about the series, they do reinforce the anime-accurate characterization in Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop. Spike, Jet Black, Julia, and Vicious, all look strikingly similar to their anime counterparts, while the changes the show has made to Faye are definitely an improvement. It’s a shame that Edward isn’t in the show, as it would have certainly been exciting to a genuine live-action version of the radical character. Still, even without him, Cowboy Bebop seems to be on the track to success – fans may be a bit divided about the show now, but once it premieres, it will hopefully connect with both loyalists and newcomers.
