The first full trailer for Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop contains some direct recreations of scenes from the original anime, suggesting some of the stories that may be included in the upcoming show. Early looks at costume design and a trailer that directly recreates Cowboy Bebop’s classic anime opening sequence already suggests that the new series will translate as much of the old as possible into a new medium. The full Cowboy Bebop trailer directly includes characters, shots, and plot elements from several of the anime’s stories.

The original Cowboy Bebop anime aired in 1998. The series takes place in 2071 and stars a crew of down-on-their-luck bounty hunters with mysterious pasts. While not initially a major hit in Japan, the series became popular among anime fans in America and is today considered a classic of the genre, currently ranking among the top 35 highest rated TV shows on IMDb. In addition to licensing the original series in 2018, Netflix announced a live-action Cowboy Bebop with a cast including starring John Cho, Danielle Pineda and Mustafa Shakir.

The Cowboy Bebop trailer contains references to at least six original anime episodes, from character names to full-on recreations of anime shots. It is likely that details of these stories will be changed, especially with the live-action series using hour-long episodes in comparison to the anime’s half-hour installments. But many of the elements of these stories will likely be translated to the live-action series.

“Asteroid Blues”

Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop trailer includes a character identified as Katerina, who tells Spike that he must have never been in love—which Spike quickly confirms is not the case. In the anime, Katerina is a drug smuggler who appears in the very first episode, as Spike Spiegel and Jet Black pursue her husband Asimov Solensan. Their Bonnie and Clyde-like run from the law provides a contrast to Spike’s more cynical and jaded perspective on romance. The couple’s story becomes a tragic one, as Asimov ingests too much of the Red Eye drug, and Katerina is forced to kill him before their ship is ripped to shreds by the police. Jan Uddin and Lydia Peckham are confirmed to play Asimov and Katerina in the live-action adaption, respectively.

“Stray Dog Strut”

The live-action Cowboy Bebop trailer features a rooftop fight between Spike and a figure that is likely Abdul Hakim. Hakim appears in episode 2 of the anime as a bounty target who is known for stealing lab animals. Spike tracks him down and a chase scene ensues, which could be what the character’s brief appearance in the trailer is depicting. Cali Nelle is slated to play Hakim in the upcoming Netflix show. The original episode serves as a way to introduce Ein, the “data dog” that Hakim steals from a research facility, who becomes part of the crew and the series’ mascot.

“Gateway Shuffle”

Another figure who appears in the Netflix Cowboy Bebop trailer is Maria Murdock, the leader of a group of eco-terrorists, played in this version by Adrienne Barbeau. Maria originally appears in the anime episode “Gateway Shuffle”, where she threatens to unleash a virus called “Monkey Business” that turns humans into apes. Cowboy Bebop often courted controversy by dealing with modern political issues, and the question of environmentalism, and what measures should be taken to protect the planet, have only grown more crucial in the years since the original series was released. “Gateway Shuffle” also sees Faye Valentine becoming a full crew member, although this may be different in the live-action series, as the trailer depicts her meeting the crew in a sunlit diner instead of a casino in space.

“Ballad of Fallen Angels”

One of the most direct translations from anime to live-action contained in the Cowboy Bebop trailer is the famous fight between Vicious and Spike in a cathedral. This scene is from the anime episode “Ballad of Fallen Angels” which is the first one in the series that delves into Spike’s backstory. The live-action Cowboy Bebop has indicated it will deal with this backstory, also including an image of Spike’s famous rose in the rain in the trailer. “Ballad of Fallen Angels” sees Spike pursuing an executive in the Red Dragon crime syndicate, which brings him into conflict with Vicious, an assassin from his past. The live-action Cowboy Bebop lists Alex Hassell as Vicious and Elena Satine as Julia, a femme fatale that ties Vicious and Spike together, as regular cast members.

“Pierrot le Fou”

One of the most memorable episodes of the Cowboy Bebop anime is “Pierrot le Fou”, where Spike is involved in a bizarre battle with the seemingly indestructible killer clown Mad Pierrot. Pierrot is Cowboy Bebop’s creepiest villain, and one of its most surreal. Despite the potentially campy plot, however, “Pierrot le Fou” is a harrowing episode that pushes Spike to his limits. In the live-action series, Mad Pierrot is played by Josh Randall. The confrontation seems as though it will be set at a defunct theme park, as in the anime.

“Cowboy Funk”

Another instantly-recognizable villain who appears in the Cowboy Bebop trailer is the Teddy Bomber, a terrorist who uses bombs hidden in teddy bears. This character appears in “Cowboy Funk”, one of the last stand-alone episodes before Cowboy Bebop’s memorable ending. In the trailer, the character is represented by a man in a giant teddy bear mask holding a bomb. Rodney Cook will provide the voice of the Teddy Bomber.

The jazz musician and former soldier Gren and crime leader Mao are also confirmed to appear in Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop, suggesting that at least some elements of the “Jupiter Jazz” two-parter will be used. The most obvious missing element is the mischievous hacker Ed, who was part of the main crew in the original series but does not appear in the Cowboy Bebop trailer. Overall, however, the use of many characters, scenes, and shots from episodes of the original Cowboy Bebop anime show how the Netflix live-action series is looking to re-create the classic series for a new generation.
