Cowboy Bebop is a legendary title that pretty much no anime fan should miss out on. The depth of the writing in this series coupled with the uniqueness of the premise combine to form a title that is an engrossing watch from start to end. The story of the Bebop Crew and other main characters in the series is an absolute treat to watch and makes for some truly amazing moments indeed.

It’s the personal stories of these characters that truly make the world of Cowboy Bebop feel all the more alive and lived-in, while the individual narratives of these people are also conveyed in a brilliant fashion. So, it’s only a given to say that ranking all the arcs of the main characters can be quite a challenge. But, after taking an objective look, one can actually figure out that some character arcs in the series are simply better than others. This list will do the same by ranking all the main characters and their respective arcs.

10 Ein

While this highly-intelligent corgi is definitely a unique aspect of this entertaining character, the animalistic roots of Ein also ultimately lead to his character arc being fairly non-consequential, for the most part.

However, this is in no way an indication of the fact that Ein is a boring character—in fact, some people might argue that any scene featuring Ein can be quite a treat to witness.

9 Edward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivrusky IV

Given the sheer mouthful of this made-up name, it’s obviously no surprise that everyone on the Bebop crew chose to refer to Edward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivrusky IV by Ed, instead.

A genius hacker who generally serves as an entertaining and comedic ray of light in a show that can deal with some dark concepts, Ed is definitely an interesting character whose backstory is equal parts intriguing and saddening.

8 Vincent Volaju

The idea of a man so broken by his past that he’s pretty much lost all his memories and ends up on a path of self-destruction is a haunting one, making the character of Vincent Volaju all the more painful to learn about.

The fact that he didn’t even remember his past love is a testament to the atrocities of war and how the drugs that Vincent was injected him ended up causing more harm than good.

7 Grencia Mars Elijah Guo Eckener

Another victim of the Titan War and the drugs that were given to soldiers at that time, Grencia’s life is a hard tale to digest, ultimately ending with the death of the character at the hands of Vicious.

However, even when he was so close to his death, Grencia wanted his departure from life to be a memorable one. He told Spike to set his body on a course for Titan so he could finally get the peace of mind that was eluding him for so long.

6 Laughing Bull

Out of all the amazing side characters featured in Cowboy Bebop, Laughing Bull is easily the most knowledgable and mysterious of the lot. From devising apt nicknames for characters that perfectly exemplified their natures to providing clues for Bounty Hunters to track their targets, it was clear that the knowledge Laughing Bull possessed was easily leagues ahead of the rest.

5 Faye Valentine

The idea of staying in a cryogenic deep sleep for more than 50 years, only to wake up with massive debt and memory loss is a haunting prospect that one wouldn’t even wish on their worst enemy. This is precisely the predicament that Faye finds herself stuck in, with her character having to deal with these problems by maintaining a tough exterior at all times.

However, Faye’s crass and arrogant behavior hides an emotional side that is rarely explored throughout the series, but it ends up stealing the show when revealed. The fact that she openly cried after Spike pretty much-welcomed death with open arms is a testament to how much Faye keeps repressed within herself at all times.

4 Julia

A character who ends up being extremely important to both the protagonist and antagonist of the series, Julia is a mysterious woman whose identity and importance to the story is slowly revealed as the show progresses over time. The fact that Spike eventually reunites with Julia by the end of the series, only for her to be shot and killed, is a heartbreaking moment for the main character.

3 Jet Black

Initially serving as a member of the Police Force, Jet Black quits this job and becomes a Bounty Hunter after losing his arm due to his corrupt partner.

He’s easily the most sensible person in the Bebop Crew, serving as a father figure to everyone on the ship while simultaneously providing to be a worthy asset through his use of wits, brawn, and technical ability across a whole host of departments.

2 Vicious

Vicious and Spike used to be partners-in-crime before Spike’s infatuation with Julia prompted him to leave the Red Dragon Syndicate and cement his once-friend as his biggest rival.

Vicious is an extremely skilled combatant. His skills with a katana make him a massive threat even against gun-wielders, while his backstory with Spike makes him a compelling character whose dynamic with the main character is incredibly intriguing to watch unfold.

1 Spike Spiegel

The protagonist of Cowboy Bebop is considered by many to be one of the greatest characters of all time, and one need only watch the show to understand how his irresistible charm and laidback personality make him one of the highlights of the series.

The fact that he fell in love with her friend’s girlfriend and had to fake his death in order to escape the Red Dragon Syndicate already led to Spike being a man who had to escape the demons of his past. Unfortunately, the past has a horrible habit of catching up with anyone regardless of how hard they try to escape it, and Spike ended up succumbing to these demons when he ended up engaging with Vicious in a fight to the death, leading one of the most beautiful and tear-jerking death scenes in anime history.
