Cricket Wireless Just Removed The Most Annoying Thing About Its Plans

Cricket Wireless is removing speed caps on some of its smartphone plans and enabling 5G access for all customers. Cricket is a prepaid MVNO that piggybacks on the excellent AT&T network for connectivity. Those looking to save some money but not sacrifice cellular coverage or speed often go to Cricket for the substantially lower pricing, especially for families.

There are some drawbacks of going prepaid over postpaid, however. For most, the biggest caveat is not being able to finance their devices over the course of 2-3 years at 0-percent interest. A slightly less notable drawback, depending on location, is that prepaid carriers are typically prioritized lower on the network than postpaid customers. This is highly dependent on location considering the towers in areas with lower population are less likely to be as busy.

Cricket is upgrading some of its plans today. As the carrier explains in a press release, new and existing customers on its $30, $40, and $55 per month plan (prices for one line) will no longer have an 8Mbps speed cap. This means customers on these plans can blow through data at their heart’s content. Cricket is also making a massive change for all customers, enabling 5G access for all plans. Now, regardless of the plan a customer chooses, 5G access is included.

The Cricket Fine Print

This is huge news considering AT&T is planning to expand mid-band 5G coverage in 2022. Not to be confused with 5G E, AT&T’s actual 5G network is a bit sparse at the moment. The carrier’s 5G deployment right now heavily relies on its 4G LTE network as the backbone resulting in users seeing similar, sometimes slower 5G speeds compared to 4G LTE. Regardless, Cricket customers will have access to AT&T’s 5G network, no matter the plan. It’s worth noting that while Cricket is removing the 8Mbps speed cap, video streaming is still limited to standard definition (480p) quality. As is the case with any carrier (prepaid or postpaid), Cricket says it reserves the right to temporarily slow speeds during network congestion.

Overall, Cricket’s new plans are now even better value. The carrier also has a higher tier $60 per month plan, which includes the ad-supported version of HBO Max and a free one-year membership to Sam’s Club. The top plan is also the only one that offers mobile hotspot (15GB) and 150GB of the carrier’s branded cloud storage. For $5 more than the $55 per month plan each month, that may be super attractive for those needing mobile hotspot or wanting HBO Max. Cricket’s $30 and $40 smartphone plans offer 2GB and 10GB of high-speed data, respectively, making them good for low-data users.
