Fans of crime and drama had a true blessing in the form of Criminal Minds. The show first premiered in 2005 and was recently renewed for its fifteenth and final season. Being on the air for a decade and a half is quite the accomplishment, particularly for a television series that doesn’t exactly tackle the softest of topics. However, the mastery with which the showrunners and actors managed to bring the FBI’s most shocking cases to life ensured the success of Criminal Minds.

But after so many years inhabiting our screens, even the biggest fans can’t brag about knowing everything about the show. Plus, with almost 400 episodes to go through, it gets even trickier. 10 What’s With Spencer’s Leg?

It’s not uncommon for television shows and movies to accommodate real-life situations the actors are going through. Oftentimes it’s easier to write something into the script than to try and cover it up, like the case of pregnancies for actresses. In other scenarios, it’s just impossible to hide it.

That’s exactly what happened at the beginning of season five when Dr. Spencer was shot in the leg. The show had to find a way to give the character an injury since Matthew’s pain was very real – the actor actually suffered a knee injury that kept him from walking for four months!

9 You Can’t Spell Criminal Minds Without…Penelope?

Undoubtedly, one of the best characters in the whole show is the hacker extraordinaire Penelope Garcia. She’s bubbly and fun-loving, and in a show that deals with such horrifying themes, any kind of comic relief is welcomed with open arms. Even within the confines of the FBI, some warmth is always appreciated.

This is why fans might be surprised to find that Penelope’s character was only supposed to be on one episode of the show. Can you imagine that? Thankfully, audiences warmed so much to Penelope that she was quickly turned into a part of the main cast. After fifteen years, it’s impossible to imagine it going any differently.

8 Shemar & Kirsten: The Dream Team

Yet another great aspect of Penelope Garcia’s character is her relationship with Special Agent Derek Morgan. The flirty and humorous banter the two have engaged in throughout the run of the show was another great source of happiness and fun in an otherwise very heavy show.

As it turns out, we have a lot to thank the actors playing Garcia and Morgan for. Even though no one doubts Kirsten and Shamar’s acting skills, their interactions were simply too natural to be forced. And this is because this banter we all love so much stems very much from the way the two actors actually interact in real life. Yay for chemistry.

7 Dr. Spencer’s Mind

Matthew Gray Gubler’s character is quite a complex one. Throughout the course of the show, we learned that the man is a true genius. Aside from an I.Q of 187, eidetic memory, he holds a Doctorate in Mathematics, Chemistry, and Engineering. Plus, he has Bachelor’s Degrees in Psychology and Sociology. Impressive doesn’t even begin to cover it!

In order to try and explain the phenomenal mind of Dr. Spencer, Gubler has put forward a series of theories, that include Asperger’s syndrome, and mild schizophrenia. This last one makes even more sense once we remember that Spencer’s mother is actually schizophrenic herself.

6 Look At J.J’s Kids

Being an actor does come with a fair share of challenges. Especially when you’re playing a seasoned FBI agent that makes a living chasing bad guys and going around with weapons. One of these challenges, albeit a significantly smaller one, is playing a parent and treating child actors as if you would our own kids.

Well, in Criminal Minds, this really wasn’t a problem. At least not for A.J. Cook, who was blessed enough to have her own kids portray her character’s children. If you were wondering why those interactions were so natural and not at all forced, then you have your answer – the motherly love was very much real.

5 Bombs? Derek’s Got It!

Because the show has been on the air for so long, sometimes is hard to remember everything about the characters. In spite of what you might think, all of the members in the unit had some backstory before they became involved in chasing some of the most terrifying minds out there in the world.

Derek, for instance, was a part of the Chicago Police Department’s bomb squad, and a highly decorated one! If you need anyone who’s an expert in defusing bombs, then he is your guy. But as much as they probably missed them down at Chicago PD, we couldn’t be happier he decided to make the jump into bigger and better things.

4 Penelope Behind Bars

Sure, Derek’s backstory is pretty interesting. But just like many other members of the team, he pretty much knew right off the bat that he wanted to be an officer of the law. What can we say, some people simply have the calling! One person who didn’t have the calling, however, was our girl Penelope Garcia.

Garcia was a hacker who managed to access the FBI’s database. They caught her and gave her a choice between facing federal prison or working for the bureau. Guess which one she chose?

3 Together 4 Ever: The Spencer & Penelope Edition

As much as we miss the old, original gang, when a television series runs for so long, fans can’t expect actors to stay faithful to the show for fifteen years. There are other commitments, other projects, and sometimes it just gets boring and predictable playing the same character for so many seasons.

With the fifteenth season set to premiere next year, and almost 400 episodes-long, Criminal Minds can brag about the fact that it kept two people from start to finish. The characters of Dr. Spencer and Penelope Garcia are now the only characters to have remained with the show since it’s inception. What a team.

2 What’s In A First Name?

We don’t know what’s with professional environments and people calling each other by their last names. Even in a team that feels more like a family than a series of co-workers, this appears to remain the norm. And such is the case for Criminal Minds because they do nothing but follow rules. Well, sometimes.

The only agents to be called by their first name are Kate Callahan and Elle Greenaway. Aside from them, Penelope, J.J, Derek, Spencer, Prentiss, and so on are always called either by their last names or their nicknames. Whatever works for them, as long as the closed cases keep on coming.

1 Letters, Letters, Letters

As we’ve mentioned before, Spencer’s mother is schizophrenic. This fact has been mentioned on the show quite a few times, and they’ve had a handful of episodes dedicated to the fact, particularly in the early seasons. Her condition means that she is committed, and can’t leave, meaning her only avenue of contact with the outside are visitors.

Because Spencer feels tormented and guilty for barely visiting his mother, he found a way to ease his emotions. This is why the character writes his mother a letter every single day. Heavy stuff, but hey – that’s Spencer.
