Crisis On Infinite Earths Gave [SPOILER] The Same Origin As Superman

Warning! Major spoilers ahead for Superman & Lois.

The “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover gave Captain Lex Luthor the same origin story as the Man of Steel in Superman & Lois. Played by Wolé Parks, the mysterious villain made himself known at the end of the series’ pilot episode. After spending most of the series premiere testing Superman’s strength, targeting various nuclear power plants to do so, the enigmatic antagonist revealed a major part of his story and it draws direct comparisons to that of Superman’s escape from Krypton.

During “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” the Anti-Monitor, an all-powerful being who sought the eradication of the multiverse, destroyed each and every world within it. When the multiverse was ultimately restored, a few earths, including the worlds of Supergirl and Black Lightning, merged to establish Earth-Prime. However, several more earths remained permanently erased from existence, with only some people managing to escape to make their way to Earth-Prime. Batwoman’s Beth Kane, Kate Kane’s twin sister, was one of them, while Supergirl’s doppelganger of Winn Schott was another.

In addition to “Crisis” changing things so that Clark Kent and Lois Lane were now the parents to twin boys, Superman & Lois has also introduced another iteration of Lex Luthor, the Man of Steel’s most famous nemesis. Lex has always hated Superman and Supergirl’s version of the character went to great lengths to destroy the Man of Steel on every earth during “Crisis.” However, Superman & Lois puts the new Lex and the titular hero on the same level due to the change in backstory. In the latest Arrowverse show’s pilot episode, Lex, wearing a costume and helmet that completely obscures his face, tells Superman of his intentions with the nuclear plants during their final showdown.

Crisis On Infinite Earths Gave [SPOILER] The Same Origin As Superman

Before stabbing the hero with a shard of Kryptonite, Lex says, “My world was destroyed, but somehow I managed to survive. I eventually arrived here, where I learned you were here, too.” He doesn’t specify what exactly wiped out his planet, but the reference to the Anti-Monitor’s actions during the crossover are clear. This is an intriguing change to Lex Luthor’s usual backstory and provides a major similarity between him and Superman, whose home planet was also destroyed by events outside of his control. Lex’s hatred for the Man of Steel remains intact no matter which earth he hails from, but the fact that the pair now have some common ground (in addition to being able to fly into space) ups the ante and adds an additional layer to their dynamic.

Superman, no matter his feelings about his nemesis, may be able to reach and relate a little more to him now because they have both faced great loss. It’s possible Clark might even use this information to try to reach this version of Luthor. The superhero is nothing if not a hopeful figure who tries to see the good in all. As Superman & Lois goes on, the more fans are bound to learn more about this iteration of the villain. How does he feel now that his world’s gone? He obviously doesn’t seem to have as much sympathy for Clark despite the fact that they now share something they previously didn’t. Either way, it’s certainly a unique addition to Lex Luthor’s history and one that can pave the way for a different storytelling avenue than what has previously been established with other iterations of the character.
