Crisis On Infinite Earths New Spectre Costume Is Disappointing

A new Crisis on Infinite Earths poster reveals the Spectre look for Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell), but the Arrowverse costume design is a disappointment. The ongoing Arrowverse crossover is set to conclude on January 14, which will mark as Amell’s final participation in the annual crossovers. With Arrow season 8 concluding shortly after the crossover, the transformation from Green Arrow to the Spectre through Jim Corrigan became one of the biggest takeaways from the first 3 parts of Crisis. This marks Spectre’s live-action debut in costume, appropriately given the character’s significant part in the Marv Wolfman and George Pérez comic the crossover is based on.

As Oliver was destined to die in the Crisis, his evolution into becoming something else will bring the character’s journey full circle. Since the Spectre is an iconic DC character, it’s a mixed bag when it comes to the costume design for the Arrowverse interpretation. From the first look reveal, it is evident that the costume department drew inspiration from Oliver’s season 8 costume. In more ways than one, Oliver and his series are what made the Arrowverse possible. Despite being the hero without any superpowers, Star City’s dedicated vigilante essentially created the Justice League of The CW.

In retrospect, his Spectre design honors Oliver’s character as a whole after helping expand Greg Berlanti’s shared DC TV universe on The CW. With Amell most likely not returning for future appearances as this version of Oliver, the two-part conclusion and the remaining Arrow episodes will be the character’s send-off. Since Oliver passed the Green Arrow mantle to his daughter Mia (Kat McNamara), setting up Green Arrow and the Canaries, it makes sense to have his final costume be reminiscent of his time as the Emerald Archer. With this being the hero’s swan-song, Oliver gets a Spectre look that still reflects what he started out as.

But as much as it pays tribute to Oliver’s role in the Arrowverse, look-wise, it fails to capture the iconic visuals of the Spectre’s costume. Through the character’s existence in the comics, Spectre’s look has always been one of the more distinct ones in the DC Universe. The idea of this powerful being having a “costume” design that is essentially basic, but still iconic, makes Spectre standout. In Oliver’s case, the costume design is more dependent on what he wore when dying as the Green Arrow than making it feel truly Spectre. The abundance of Spectre’s white skin also takes away the god-feeling aspect of the beloved DC hero. While the color of the hood-cape pays homage to Green Arrow’s color schemes, it also makes the design look cheap and reused, by Arrowverse standards.

With this being the Spectre’s big debut, it’s fair to assume that the approach at the costume would be something more unique. It remains to be seen if Spectre – through Oliver or someone else – will continue to have an active role in the Arrowverse post-Crisis. But Spectre being in the crossover at all is a major deal and should, therefore, be acknowledged through more accurate costume design. Very little is known currently about how the Arrowverse will approach the Spectre from a bigger picture. Through recent TV spots and the newly released poster, Oliver’s role as Spectre has only been teased. Despite the initial reveal making the costume look watered down, it might not be too late for fans to get a proper enjoyment of the Spectre in action.

The footage that has been released thus far only reveals portions of the final showdown with the Anti-Monitor (LaMonica Garrett), including the Spectre’s role in it. Given the short time that remains before Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow resumes the Arrowverse crossover, The CW will likely not reveal too much more. What is possible, however, is that when viewers see Oliver in action as the Spectre, it might evolve into something more than the poster initially revealed. The possibility certainly exists that, through special effects, Crisis on Infinite Earths will have Spectre in all of his glory in the finished product as Oliver Queen joins his allies one last time against their biggest threat.
