Critical Role Darrington Press Next Game Makes Wedding Planning a Bigger Nightmare

Planning a wedding is never easy. Whether it’s Bridezilla melting down over hair and makeup or the wedding party having to be on constant lookout for that lich who swore vengeance against those meddling adventurers, pretty much anything can turn a beautiful day into a disaster. Fortunately, Critical Role’s Darrington Press is crafting a solution with their upcoming tabletop game: Guardians of Matrimonia.

Officially announced during Critical Role’s seven year anniversary week, fans were given a sneak peak at just one of the four Guardians of Matrimonia. Along with a very brief description of the upcoming game, they released a glimpse at the Ale-Chemist. Though there is no official release date at this time, it certainly promises to become a favorite addition to tabletop game nights.

Set in Critical Role’s high-fantasy world setting of Exandria, the Guardians of Matrimonia are an elite team of wedding planners who put their skills to the test ensuring that even adventurers have the wedding of their dreams. While the team works together to fend off magical disasters and monsters threatening to ruin the couples’ special day. Players will have pre-built card decks that help them deal with any threats they might face as a team.

Decks also contain cards designed to aid them in their chosen specialty so they can earn tips while carrying out their duties. Players will need to utilize their deck throughout the wedding, combining their abilities with the rest of the team to ensure a successful and happy event with no trouble. Unfortunately, running out of cards before all threats have been dealt with and the wedding is blissfully completed increases the risks of losing the game, so players will need to make careful choices if they want to carry out their work successfully.

Darrington Press’ announcement also featured a glimpse at artwork for one of the Guardians: the Ale-Chemist. The Ale-Chemist’s skills have made them a master of hospitality, and in their arsenal is a range of tasty beverages they can concoct for the wedding guests. Their abilities can also be used in player versus player situations with the rest of their crew while battling and dispersing potential threats and performing basic duties.

One of the interesting things about Guardians of Matrimonia is the potential for inspiration that can be integrated into an ongoing Dungeons & Dragons campaign. For example, two player characters may fall in love on their journey, a PC might want to settle down with an NPC, or the party could be asked to attend an important wedding. With Guardians of Matrimonia, Dungeons Masters can not only gather ideas for such a wedding, but might even consider temporarily shifting to the card game to see how things play out.

There is no official release date yet for Guardians of Matrimonia, but the last game from Darrington Press, Uk’otoa, released late in Spring 2021. With weddings playing a major role during the late spring and early summer season, one can only hope to see this nuptial-inspired game sometime over the next few months. In the meantime, Wizards of the Coast recently released the first official Critical Role D&D module, Call of the Netherdeep, to tide gamers over for a while.
