Crossbones May Appear In More Than One What If Episode

Frank Grillo hints Crossbones could appear in more than one episode of Marvel’s What If…? series. 2021 promises to bring a jam-packed Marvel slate to fans, with a grand total of ten projects currently scheduled to debut. A good number of those are exclusively for Disney+, including the animated What If…?. Scheduled for this summer, each episode of What If…? will focus on a new hypothetical scenario in the MCU, from the idea that Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) takes the super soldier serum to T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) becoming Star-Lord instead of Black Panther.

What If…? will feature the vocal talents of numerous MCU actors, including those who haven’t been seen in a while. Just last week, Grillo confirmed he’ll be bringing his Crossbones to What If…?, to the surprise and delight of fans. Grillo made his MCU debut in Captain America: The Winter Soldier as SHIELD-turned-Hydra agent Brock Rumlow. Despite being one of Cap’s biggest enemies in the comics, Crossbones was quickly killed off in Captain America: Civil War, though he made a quick cameo in Avengers: Endgame years later. Beyond that, fans have waited to see if Crossbones could ever return somehow.

Grillo sat down with Screen Rant recently to discuss his new movie No Man’s Land, where he briefly discussed his upcoming stint on What If…?. While talking about his time in the MCU, Grillo seemed to indicate he’ll be recording even more episodes for What If…? sometime in the near future. Grillo said:

Frank Grillo: For me, it’s always fun. I’m always flattered and humbled by people even digging Crossbones, who was really onscreen for 10 minutes. Brock Rumlow was all over Winter Soldier, and then Crossbones unfortunately met his demise very soon after. I’m always humbled by being included in any of it, and it was fun. I didn’t know much about it, but my son did. I went to do it, and I won’t tell you anything about it. But it was a hoot. I think I have to go do four or five more of them pretty soon; I don’t know. I don’t even know if I’m allowed to talk about it. They’ll probably find me; they’ve always threatened to fire me for talking about things.

It isn’t clear if this is for season 1 or season 2 of What If…? (which has in fact already been confirmed), though it seems likely that it could be for the show’s sophomore run. It’s been said that every MCU film will be represented in a What If…? episode, so Crossbones could conceivably appear in any of the Captain America installments (save for The First Avenger’s, which will be the Peggy Carter episode). One story could imagine a world where Crossbones lives and continues to terrorize Cap, which would be an interesting scenario to consider.

Grillo once stated he was contracted for more MCU movies, though What If…? could fill in some of those slots. It does seem unlikely that Crossbones will appear in live-action form for anything other than a flashback, but stranger things have happened. Grillo’s presence in What If…? reinforces the concept that any Marvel character could be used at any point for anything, so fans know better than to write someone off completely. Even if he doesn’t appear in future films, Grillo will be heard in What If…?, and that’s pretty exciting.
