Cruel Summer: 10 Burning Questions Fans Still Have After the Season 1 Finale

The season 1 finale of Cruel Summer has left fans with more questions than answers. What will happen in season 2? These are the biggest questions.

When the first season wrapped up of Freeform’s smash summer suspense show, Cruel Summer, in mid-June 2021, fans got the answers to many of the long-awaited, burning questions that they had been asking from the get-go. The cable network got the green light for season 2 (slated for 2022), and, as expected, many fans were left with more burning questions by the season finale, some that involve relationships between parents, main characters, and the aftermath of the shocking twist ending.

While most storylines were neatly wrapped up for audiences, there are still huge, lingering questions about the fate of Jeanette, Kate, Mallory, Vince. Ben, and more Cruel Summer characters people love, hate to love, and love to hate.

10 What Will Happen After Joy’s Affair?

One of the catalysts for Kate’s kidnapping was when she left home after a confrontation with her mom about the affair she was having with their gardener, Scott. When Joy denied it — and accused Kate of stirring up trouble — she slapped her and continued to lie to Rod.

In a later episode, Rod tells Joy that they have yet to discuss it, and will do so as a family once Kate returns home to them. Although viewers see that Kate is back with her family, they never know about the resolution between her parents, and are left to wonder what was said, done, and why Rod decided to stay with Joy.

9 What Happens With Cindy & Jeanette & Greg? Or Cindy & Angela?

When Cindy becomes disillusioned in her marriage and their union dissolves, she becomes a flight attendant while Greg stays in Skylin and begins a relationship with the bar owner, Angela. Cindy comes to visit — and connect with — Angela, as well as telling her the truth of what happened between her and Greg before she left.

Now that the trial is over and Cindy has some regrets about leaving Jeanette, what will happen (not only between mother and daughter) but between Cindy and her estranged husband? Will they reunite? Will they stay separated, and Cindy and Angela become real, close friends? It is all still up in the air, and something fans hope season 2 will explore.

8 Will Ashley Find Out That Derek Printed Off Her Chat Log?

In the middle of the season, after Derek Turner (big brother to Jeanette) and Ashley Wallis (step-sister to Kate Wallis, Rod’s daughter) have sex for the first time, a sweet moment follows where they are smiling and cuddling. When Ashley gets up to take a shower and Derek hops on to her computer to check his email, he sees her private chat room where she is discussing Kate’s secrets.

Derek immediately prints it off, leaves without saying anything, and heads home to give it to Jeanette, knowing it will discredit Kate’s story and, perhaps by extension, the accusation she made against Jeanette. But will he tell Ashley? Will she find out before he tells her? What will it do to their relationship? These are all burning questions fans have for season 2.

7 Will Ashley Talk To Kate? Does Their Relationship Improve?

In the various timelines of Cruel Summer, fans see the relationship between Kate and Ashley evolve and posing as her private chat room friend (her trauma journal), though Kate doesn’t find out until the season finale. Their sisterhood starts off very rocky, mostly from Ashley’s end. She tries to make things right after Kate reappears, but to her dismay, Kate resists. As their relationship slowly begins to mend, Kate learns about Ashely’s online identity, demanding that she answer her and talk to her and ask why she would give Jeanette’s lawyer the chat room log (not knowing yet that it was Derek, Jeanette’s older brother).

Will Ashley speak with Kate? Will their relationship continue to improve, or will Kate ever be able to trust her again? Audiences hope season 2 remedies this situation.

6 Do Vince And Ben Reconcile?

At this point in the show, Vince and Ben are no longer in a relationship or on speaking terms (at Ben’s prompting). Although they want to be with one another, it is too painful for Ben.

When Jamie goes to visit him, he gets through to Ben by telling him that Vince Fuller did nothing wrong, so not to punish him. This seems to work on Ben, as he visits Vince later in the video store where he works and asks for another chance to be with him and earn Vince’s trust. Surely season 2 will resolve this for fans come 2022.

5 Why Does Kate Forgive Mallory So Easily?

Finally, the truth is revealed: Mallory was the one that saw Kate through the window that fateful Christmas Eve in 1993, not Jeanette. While she thought it was a blonde girlfriend or sister of Mr. Harris (and not Kate, not realizing it until her rescue), she also didn’t tell Kate (or Jeanette, for that matter, allowing instead for it to be open season on her former friend and put up her own facade for months, even after she told Kate their “no secrets” rule.

As Mallory is packing a bag to leave town for good, Kate finds her and confronts her about it. In crocodile tears, she explains herself. And Kate forgives her immediately. Many fans were left reeling, wondering why she would let Mallory off the hook so quickly after everything. Maybe season 2 will address this.

4 Will We Learn More About Martin Harris?

The villain of the show, Assistant Principal at Skylin High and Kate’s groomer/kidnapper Martin Harris, is dead, and audiences finally know how and why. The last two episodes of season 1 answered in-depth fans’ questions about what happened leading up to the kidnapping, Kate’s time in his basement, and how he met his fate.

There are still some lingering inquires, though: will fans see the police arrive the night he decides to end it? Will we see any more of his time at the high school while keeping Kate hostage, continuing to act like an upstanding citizen? Time will tell come 2022.

3 Why Did Jeanette Get Back Together With Jamie?

Many Cruel Summer viewers were repulsed by Jamie’s actions from the beginning: he selfishly got drunk on Kate’s birthday in 1993, hit Jeanette in 1994, got in a drunk driving accident with Ben, and stalked Jeanette and kissed her behind Kate’s back in 1995 (and then gaslit Kate about it later). None of these were mistakes or incidents to be taken lightly.

So why did Jeanette get back together with him? And does she really love Jamie, or just love the status she had being with him, and that he was Kate’s first (whom she wants to be, even still). Fans are demanding season 2 answer this.

2 Will Kate And Mallory Have A Relationship?

In one of the more lighthearted moments of the final episode of season 1, viewers witness Kate dancing in the streets to Garbage’s “Only Happy When It Rains” (harkening back to the dance she did in the street at night to “Zombie” by The Cranberries) and sharing a kiss with her best friend.

There was really no hint at Kate’s being anything but heterosexual, and while many thought that Mallory was gay, this scene was still quite unexpected. Kallory shippers are anxious to see if this kiss blossoms into a romantic relationship between the two girls.

1 What Will Unfold For Jeanette?

At the very end of the season 1 episode of Freeform’s Cruel Summer, fans see Jeanette (one again) break into Martin Harris’s house in the summer of 1994. As she makes her way through, Kate hears her from in the basement and begins to yell and cry for help.

Just when fans begin to believe that Jeanette is innocent, they are thrown through a loop and realize just how ill Jeanette must be in order for her to act on such an event. Will viewers of season 2 see that secret revealed? Or a new lawsuit brought against her?
