Cruella Director Wants To Make A Sequel And Shares Some Of His Ideas

Cruella director Craig Gillespie revealed that he is open to making a sequel to the Disney live-action prequel. Cruella wrapped filming in 2019 before premiering simultaneously in theatres and on Disney Plus with Premier Access last weekend.

Set in 1970s punk London, Disney’s Cruella follows Emma Stone’s Estella, an aspiring fashion designer who enters a life of crime and mischief after she starts working for Emma Thompson’s Baroness von Hellman. The supporting cast includes Joel Fry as Jasper Badun, Paul Walter Hauser as Horace Badun, and Mark Strong as John. Glenn Close notably played Cruella in the 1996 and 2002 live-action 101 Dalmatians films.

In a recent interview with Collider, Gillespie praised Disney for supporting his ideas and embracing the dark tone of the Cruella origin film. The filmmaker noted that he would be open to directing a sequel if it was with the same cast and crew. “I feel like we’ve only just met her,” said Gillespie, while adding, “I’d love to now see the full-blown Cruella, fully loaded. She’s managed to get the support system around her and she can really expand on her brand.” Thompson and Stone have also expressed interest in returning for a second installment. Thompson jokingly agreed that they should make a Godfather II-style sequel that features Close as an older Cruella.

Disney has yet to reveal if a sequel is in the works. The live-action blockbuster drew 686,000 U.S. households on Disney Plus over the four-day Memorial Day holiday, which was 39% less than Mulan. While both titles were available on Disney Plus, Mulan wasn’t released in theatres. Cruella opened to 3,892 U.S./Canadian theaters and grossed $26.6 million, while A Quiet Place 2 took home the top spot and broke all previous pandemic-era box office debut records by earning $47 million.

Gillespie, who notably directed I, Tonya and Lars and the Real Girl, is currently working on the highly anticipated Hulu limited series Pam & Tommy. The Point Grey produced show will explore Pamela Anderson and Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee’s tabloid-dominated relationship. The couple was famously involved in a scandal in which their honeymoon sex tape was stolen and leaked to the public. Pam & Tommy’s all-star cast includes Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s Sebastian Stan, Lily James, Taylor Schilling, and Seth Rogen. At this time, it is unclear when the eight-episode series will be released on the streaming platform.

Cruella ended with the perfect sequel setup by revealing how Roger and Anita came to own Pongo and Perdita, respectively. However, it sounds like the creative team wants to continue focusing on Cruella before venturing into the classic story seen in 101 Dalmatians if that was ever the plan, to begin with.

Cruella can be currently seen in theatres and on Disney Plus.
