Crusader Kings 3 Royal Court Expansion Announced At PDXCON

Paradox Interactive has announced the first major expansion for Crusader Kings 3, which is Crusader Kings 3: Royal Court. This expansion will allow players to create a court for their ruler, from which they can manage their kingdoms.

Crusader Kings 3 casts the player as a ruler in the Middle Ages. Unlike other strategy games, where players control an entire side, Crusader Kings 3 is all about controlling individual members of a dynasty. Having strong heirs and a large family to continue the line of succession is of vital importance and the player will take on the role of different rulers throughout the game, each with their own skills and quirks. This familiarity is an important part of the appeal of the game, as it adds a Game of Thrones-style dynamic to the political conflicts.

Crusader Kings 3 has already received one DLC pack, with Crusader Kings 3: Northern Lords adding Norse-themed content to the game, but a massive expansion is on the way. Paradox announced at PDXCON that Crusader Kings 3: Royal Court is in development. There’s currently no word regarding a release window.

The biggest addition in this Crusader Kings 3 DLC is physical royal courts that the player can build once they reach King/Emperor status. A royal court is a visual representation of the player’s throne room, which they can deck out with the trappings of power, such as heirlooms and ancient relics. Players are able to hold court and listen to petitions from courtiers and vassals, as they are asked to pass judgment, with each decision having its own ramifications. An impressive royal court can also entice inspired people to the kingdom, who can create items for the ruler. The Crusader Kings personal inventory system is also returning and characters will be able to possess items that can aid them. There are also sweeping changes coming to the culture system in the game, with players able to split from their traditional cultures and create something new, keeping the elements that they like best.

The interpersonal relationships between monarchs, their allies, their enemies, and their family is one of the big draws of Crusader Kings 3, and the Royal Court DLC will greatly expand this aspect of the gameplay. The illusion of power is strengthened by showing off wealth and building castles and palaces that are adorned with riches. Crusader Kings 3: Royal Court will give players the chance to show off the grandeur of their kingdom, but that comes with its own risks, as excess breeds jealousy, and a fancy court might convince younger relatives and unruly vassals that they should be the one sitting on the throne.
