Cuphead Is Getting Bonus Features On Xbox One Following PS4 Release

Cuphead has suddenly and surprisingly has at last launched on PS4 after a long wait from PlayStation owners, but some bonus features will be held back just for Xbox One (but not immediately). Cuphead started out as an Xbox console exclusive, so developer and publisher StudioMDHR have not left their first fans to be forgotten.

Cuphead is a run-and-gun style game first released in 2017 on Xbox One, as well as PC. In 2019, a port for the Nintendo Switch was released, and finally a port has been released for PS4. The game’s aesthetic is inspired by 1930 cartoons from studios like Disney and Fleischer Studios, and it really leans into the surrealism that characterizes this genre and time of animation. The game lets the player take control of Cuphead, and a second player can control Cuphead’s brother, Mugman. Players need to fight their way through several levels, each with it’s own theme and boss fight at the end of the level. The game is known for its high difficulty but was very well received nonetheless.

StudioMDHR made an announcement about the game’s release on PS4, along with a stop-motion trailer created especially for this announcement. It says that many aspects of the game were originally inspired by old, classic PlayStation titles, and that it feels “surreal”to know players will be traveling through the game holding a PlayStation controller, just like when the creators played through PlayStation games when they were young. StudioMDHR adds that it wants to celebrate the Xbox fans that believed in the game from the beginning, so will be releasing a free update for fans on Xbox One that will add a digital art gallery, behind-the-scenes commentary features, and a playable soundtrack to the game. Unfortunately this update is still in its early stages of planning, StudioMDHR saying that it’s putting the effort in to making this update the same kind of excellence that it aims for in all its work.

StudioMDHR takes a moment to thank Microsoft for helping the dreams of two brothers come true by realizing their vision for the game three years ago. They also thank the team that helped to create the trailer for this announcement, Stop Motion Department, and offer some photos of the 1930’s style stop-motion animation from behind-the-scenes. The song that goes along with the animation is a new, original song and credit for this is given to the in-game devil’s right hand man, the character featured in the trailer, King Dice.

The PlayStation community has been waiting for a Cuphead port since the game’s conception, and StudioMDHR is delighted that PS4 players can now experience the battle first hand. The time and effort put into making this sudden announcement is immense, and shows the passion that still exists for the project years after its creation. As the game’s first audience, Xbox One players are being treated to a host of special bonuses, and while it’s unfortunate that they will have to wait for the update, it is still humbling to see StudioMDHR pay their respects to the Xbox community for being supportive as the game has grown.
