Larry David plays a hypochondriac in Curb Your Enthusiasm. He sees professionals for any minor discomfort he feels, as well as for serious injuries resulting from his personal life’s wacky situations. His encounters with doctors often make for some of the show’s best episodes.

Larry gets into confrontations with medical doctors in several episodes like “Shaq.” Although Curb Your Enthusiasm is inconsistent with Larry’s therapy, he sporadically gets mental health doctors into trouble in episodes like “The Therapists.” When Larry deals with these professionals, the result is some of the highest-ranked episodes on IMDb.

“Funkhouser’s Crazy Sister” — 8.3

Larry argues with doctors in their offices, but he also gets into confrontations with them in his personal life. In “Funkhouser’s Crazy Sister,” Larry spends time taking care of Loretta Black in his home after she falls ill. Her caretaker Dr. Schaffer makes a house call to check on her and ends up getting into a debate with Larry.

When Dr. Schaeffer takes a lemonade out of Larry’s fridge without asking, the two argue angrily about whether or not it defies social convention to do so. The confrontation is one of a few between Dr. Shaeffer and Larry and is full of laughs. Perhaps the high point of the debate is when Larry backpedals, offering Shaeffer a pear. The doctor tells Larry, “don’t condescend me with your tiny pear.”

“Interior Decorator” — 8.3

Sometimes Larry’s encounters with doctors poke fun at the protocol of their offices. “Interior Decorator” unpacks the inconsistency of certain practices’ scheduling. A patient is seen before Larry after signing in before him, even though he has an appointment scheduled before her.

Larry complains to the front desk about the situation, urging them to see patients based on their scheduled time, regardless of the sign-in sheet. At the end of the episode, Larry and the patient both race to sign in and be seen first. However, they take Larry’s complaints to heart and see the other patient before Larry because she is scheduled before him. Larry should have been careful what he wished for.

“Running With The Bulls” — 8.5

Larry meets with therapists a few times throughout Curb Your Enthusiasm. In “Running With The Bulls,” Larry meets with a new therapist Dr. Templeton. However, he gets distracted during their session. While Dr. Templeton tries to analyze Larry’s dream, Larry stops him to ask about their different chairs.

He complains to the doctor about his uncomfortable chair and spends his entire session trying to convince him to buy a better chair for his patients. Watching Dr. Templeton squirm during the confrontation is hilarious. It’s only matched when he tries to tactfully cut off their session during the argument.

“Shaq” — 8.7

Fans get one of the most notable guest appearances in all of Curb Your Enthusiasm with “Shaq.” Doctors come into play after Larry accidentally injures Shaquille O’Neal by sticking his legs out courtside at an L.A. Lakers game and tripping the legendary athlete. When Larry visits Shaq in the hospital, he meets the Lakers team doctor Dr. Craig Wiggins.

Hilarity ensues when Larry tells Shaq that Dr. Wiggins is cheating during their game of Scattergories. Larry wants the doctor to diagnose a strange spot on his skin, but Wiggins won’t help. Not only does Larry ask the doctor to use his professional skills off the clock, but he also does it after embarrassing him. Larry’s insistence on “fairness” gets the doctor fired.

“The Spite Store” — 8.7

Some audiences think “The Spite Store” features a story arc only Curb Your Enthusiasm could have done. However, Larry also questions the conventions involved in being treated by medical professionals in the episode. His knees are bothering him, and when he goes to get treated, his doctor Dr. Seiderman suggests he undergo surgery. However, Larry gets a second opinion from a different doctor.

Seiderman is offended by Larry’s lack of good faith and argues with the other M.D. when they cross paths. The confrontation suggests doctors take it personally when patients want a second opinion on their ailments. It’s funny to see the doctors act so unprofessionally, and makes for a great episode.

“The Surrogate” — 8.7

Larry gets himself in a sticky situation thanks to medical attention in “The Surrogate.” While being treated, Larry criticizes the magazine selection of his doctor’s office. The doctor responds cheerfully, and Larry avoids an ongoing debate on the subject. However, he encounters a different problem when tests are run for his heart health.

An attractive nurse Renee, whom Larry’s friend Richard Lewis happens to be dating, makes Larry’s heart race while his doctor is performing tests. As a result, Larry has to wear a heart monitor until the following day. Larry is uncomfortable with the device until he uses it to fake a heart attack in one of his funniest physical gags.

“Mister Softee” — 8.7

Some fans consider “Mister Softee” one of the best episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm. In the episode, Larry reveals an embarrassing childhood memory that causes him trauma. He tells his therapist Dr. Thurgood about being kicked out of a Mr. Softee truck when he was a boy, after being caught playing strip poker with the owner’s daughter. The jingle from the truck triggers the memory and causes problems for Larry’s personal life.

Although Mr. Thurgood is used as a plot device, he also provides an opportunity for Larry to poke fun at the protocols of talk therapy. Larry runs into Thurgood outside the office and the two chat. Larry is outraged when the doctor bills him for their time. The question of when a therapist’s time can be billed and when it can’t is both interesting and ripe for comedy.

“Vehicular Felatio” — 8.8

Larry is trying to figure out a way to break up with his girlfriend Loretta Black in “Vehicular Felatio.” Loretta suffers from cancer, and Larry takes her to a special doctor. The M.D. is known for telling patients to remove toxic people from their lives to improve their health.

Larry underscores his worst traits during the meeting and his behavior is sure to crack fans up. However, Dr. Trundle gives Larry a run for his money, making audiences laugh with her attempt at remaining professional throughout Larry’s foolish display.

“The N Word” — 8.8

Larry dates a doctor in “The N Word.” He meets Sheila Flomm at the hospital when Jeff undergoes surgery to help stop his snoring. However, Larry overhears a racist tirade in the hospital bathroom and tells the story to Sheila. He repeats what he hears word for word, and a doctor passing by overhears him, thinking Larry is performing the tirade.

Doctors are used as plot devices in the episode, but Larry also makes fun of stereotypical doctor behavior, like writing illegible prescriptions. When Sheila gives Larry a note before their date, he needs a pharmacist to read the note, as they have the experience of reading doctors’ handwriting. He misinterprets her message, leading the pharmacist to also see Larry as a racist.

“The Therapists” — 9

In the highest-rated episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm featuring doctors, “The Therapists” deals with mental health counselors more thoroughly than any other episode. Larry is trying to win his ex-wife Cheryl back, and his therapist Dr. Bright suggests he give her an ultimatum.

The suggestion backfires, and Larry drags Bright to Cheryl’s front door to tell her it was his idea. Larry blurs the lines of his and Bright’s relationship after Larry develops a scheme to influence Cheryl’s therapist that backfires and lands Bright in jail. The wackiness of the plot and the hilarious one-time appearance of Dr. Bright make “The Therapists” a stand-out episode.
