Curb Your Enthusiasm Albert Brooks Role Is A Perfect Bob Einstein Tribute

Curb Your Enthusiasm season 11 features the debut of Albert Brooks (as himself) on the show, which doubles as a perfect tribute to his late real-life brother Bob Einstein (Marty Funkhouser). Since Curb premiered in 2000, the series has seen a plethora of celebrities cameoing or having recurring roles as themselves or fictional people, at times making the show’s universe a bit confusing. Ted Danson reoccurs as Ted Danson, but Vince Vaughn portrays the fictional Freddy Funkhouser and Big Mouth’s Nick Kroll portrays a snooty waiter. Albert Brooks is another well-known comedian playing himself as a friend of Larry David, but his real-life kinship to one of Curb’s fictional characters muddles the universe again.

While Albert Brooks (real name, yes, Albert Einstein) is known in his own right for his long comedy and film career, he’s preceded in Curb Your Enthusiasm notoriety by his brother Bob Einstein, who portrayed Larry’s friend Marty Funkhouser for several years on the show. Marty was one of the greatest recurring characters on the series who wasn’t actually a fictional version of the real actor, being crafted as a man whose family problems Larry inevitably makes worse. Better known as the Funk Man on Curb, Marty was a staple for Larry’s mishaps and social errs over the course of the series. Sadly, Bob Einstein passed away in 2019 shortly before Curb Your Enthusiasm season 10. The series never actually addressed Bob Einstein’s death nor killed off Marty Funkhouser’s character, with Jeff Garlin telling The Daily Beast there’s no place for melancholy on Curb Your Enthusiasm.

In fact, Curb Your Enthusiasm wrote off Marty Funkhouser’s absence as simply him going away to China, while essentially replacing his role with the character’s cousin Freddy Funkhouser (played by Vince Vaughn). Not addressing Bob Einstein’s death nor the fact that Marty will never truly return to the series fits the no-sadness rule for Curb, but it appears the show’s season 11 premiere finally gave the beloved comedian a Larry David Curb Your Enthusiasm-style tribute. The episode centered on Albert Brooks throwing himself a “live funeral” in which he gathers his closest friends and listens to them say the nice things they normally would have said at a funeral. Having Brooks make his first appearance for a comedic faux-funeral following his real-life brother’s death is the perfect way to secretly say goodbye to a beloved Curb Your Enthusiasm cast member as well as keep Einstein’s legacy on the show alive.

Most of the well-known celebrities who cameo on Curb Your Enthusiasm only make a one-and-done appearance, but it seems like Albert Brooks could become a familiar face on the series. With Einstein gone and Richard Lewis only available for one episode due to health problems, Larry is going to need some more comedians to have a lovable frenemy relationship with. As far as Curb Your Enthusiasm’s season 11 premiere goes, Brooks already seems to be taking over the antagonistic friendship Marty Funkhouser’s had with Larry. At the same time, Brooks staying on the series would also suggest that Bob Einstein also exists within the show’s universe outside of Marty, meaning the continuity could break if Brooks mentions the passing of his brother.

Either way, Albert Brooks joining the Curb Your Enthusiasm cast is a great way to keep Bob Einstein’s legacy on the show alive. Although Freddy Funkhouser has taken over the role of Larry’s unfortunate Funkhouser family contact, Brooks will be able to bring back to the style and dynamic of his real-life brother. With Curb Your Enthusiasm already seeing Larry and Susie chide Albert for being a COVID hoarder and ruining his “live funeral,” the comedian is already getting a warm welcome into the show that his brother loved being part of.
