Cyberpunk 2077: PS5 Frame Rate Is Higher, But Xbox Series X Looks Better

In a comparison between two current-gen consoles, Cyberpunk 2077 has a higher framerate on the PlayStation 5, but looks better on the Xbox Series X.

Cyberpunk 2077 doesn’t look great on consoles in general when compared with top-of-the-line PCs, but a graphics comparison shows that while PlayStation 5 generally hits higher frame rates, Xbox Series X looks better in terms of resolution. 8 years of development should have delivered a quality, finished product, but with three delays coupled with a pre-release crunch to ensure there weren’t more, players are trying to squeeze every ounce of performance out their machines for CD Projekt Red’s latest and most underbaked RPG.

The number of issues that Cyberpunk 2077 is dealing with is already too long to list, but they range from catastrophic game-crashing glitches to seizure-inducing strobe lights, NPC gliding along the ground to cars jittering down the road, and everything in between. A recent patch seem to have fixed some of the worst problems to make the game more playable, but it’s still far from perfect on consoles. Graphics especially weren’t safe from the wrath of crunch development woes, with the game’s HDR setting broken on PS5 and Xbox Series X and resolution and frame rate not quite living up to the standard players were expecting on the lead-up to release.

On PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, there are some discrepancies as far as visual integrity when comparing one to the other that players might want to keep in mind before buying one version over another. It’s a situation that comes mostly down to the consoles’ respective hardware, as well as how the game’s code responds to each console’s strengths and weaknesses. Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry compared the game’s graphic fidelity on all three consoles and reported their differences in the video below:

On the PS5, the game has the same dynamic resolution output as shown on the PS4 Pro, but it hits higher frame rate targets, ranging between 50-6ofps on average. The Xbox Series X, however, flips this around: its dynamic resolution achiever higher than last-generation consoles and even the PS5. But while the Series X can match the PS5’s frame rate in some cases, even in Performance mode, there are more noticeable drops. The Xbox Series S is the proverbial curate’s egg, matching neither the graphical fidelity of the Series X nor the PS5’s high frame counts, but it wins in terms of sheer consistency – perfect for players who just want to play Cyberpunk 2077 without many frills or much frustration.

Of course, these are issues that most likely won’t make or break a player’s decision on which console to buy or play Cyberpunk 2077 on, since that’s likely already been decided by which console they have their hands on first, as most can’t afford multiple top-shelf gaming machines. For all but PC players, the inconsistencies between the game’s different versions’ graphics will likely be the least of their worries, especially as frame rate and resolution dips are nothing new to console owners. However, it does make for an interesting benchmark in terms of how the new consoles’ hardware differ, especially for prospective early adopters still on the fence about their purchases.
