With the release of Cyberpunk 2077, RPG fans were likely excited to get their hands on the game’s new customization system. Cyberpunk 2077’s character creation system includes several genital options, but it appears these do not have any real impact on a character’s behavior or gameplay. As with many recent games, player freedom matters, even when it comes to choosing a character’s genitals, and this both aligns closely with the cyberpunk subgenre and allows for greater player expression.

The cyberpunk subgenre first appeared in 1960s sci-fi literature. A key concept in cyberpunk worlds is individuals’ ability to modify their bodies in any way they wish. Cyberpunk 2077 incorporates this into character customization by giving players the ability to add genitals of their choosing, regardless of perceived gender.

In cyberpunk fiction, body modifications like these are not necessarily a means to have characters feel more accepted into society, as cyberpunk heroes are often societal outcasts. Either way, Cyberpunk 2077 gives players the ability to do whatever they want with character customization, whether it’s to make their characters more relatable to themselves or simply because they want to.

Cyberpunk 2077’s Genital Customization Doesn’t Affect Gameplay

While players have the ability to choose between two penis options and one vagina and can select one of five pubic hair styles, once the customization is complete, their characters’ genitals don’t affect any gameplay options or dialogue choices. If these sexual organs don’t have a great in-game impact, why would the creators choose to add this to Cyberpunk 2077? Part of the answer lies in the ideologies of the cyberpunk subgenre, but genital customization can also simply help players relate better to their in-game characters. Granted, Cyberpunk 2077’s two character voice options limit truly free gender expression, and CD Projekt Red has been heavily criticized for its treatment of trans people, both in-game and out.

Genital selection may not affect gameplay, but players who enjoy spending hours customizing their characters may appreciate this addition to the game. And for those who hope to create characters that more closely align with their real-world gender identities, Cyberpunk 2077’s genital customization is more than many games offer. Still, the game’s cyberpunk genre trappings do mean genital customization is used more for superficial accessorizing than identity fulfilment, but players will likely appreciate the system, regardless, for any number of reasons.
