Cyberpunk 2077s Seize the Day Trailer is Slightly Ironic

Cyberpunk 2077 gets closer every day. CD Projekt Red, developer of the critically acclaimed Witcher series, aims to create an RPG which combines the freedom of Skyrim with the storytelling found in The Witcher 3 in this latest project.

A new “Seize the Day” trailer has just been released with Keanu Reeves telling players to “seize the day, then set it on fire.” It’s an ironic ask considering one central feature of the game, as well as recent events in the development of Cyberpunk 2077.

A Day in Night City

Cyberpunk 2077 is set in Night City, which makes “seize the day” seem like an odd choice. The trailer does treat fans to some nice day-time shots of the west coast metropolis, but with the genre’s emphasis on night life, especially music, the choice of slogan seems to stand out. Keanu Reeves will be playing rebellious rocker boy Johnny Silverhand, while other famous musicians like Grimes have joined the cast as other musical acts in-universe.

The Night City of Cyberpunk is actually named posthumously after its founder, Richard Night. Before then, it was named Coronado City – not to be mistaken with the actual city Coronado in California, which is located in a different part of the state. After Night’s assassination in 1998, the city was renamed in his honor. The game’s day and night cycle does stick out among first-person open-world RPGs. One day is predicted to last around 3 real-world hours in Night City, compared to a day in The Witcher 3, which lasts about 1 hour 30 minutes and a day in Skyrim which comes in at only 10 minutes shorter. However, it isn’t just the setting’s name which makes the choice of phrase in the trailer stick out.

The Crunch

CD Projekt Red recently broke an old promise the studio had made not to make its employees work crunch time in order to finish Cyberpunk 2077 before release. The original commitment to this promise was likely among the reasons that Cyberpunk’s release has been delayed multiple times over the course of its production.

The news that CD Projekt Red would now be making its employees work crunch time was broken by Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, though in another email with the journalist, CD Projekt Red’s Head of Studio Adam Badowski admitted that “crunch should never be the answer. But we’ve extended all other possible means of navigating the situation,” likely referring to the multiple delays to the game’s release, as well as the on-going pandemic.

This comes at a time when more fans are reevaluating the lionization of CD Projekt Red as among the most ethical game development studios, and for some the phrasing in the new trailer will likely rile feathers. After all, it’s a call to make the most out of the present, and in terms of crunch, that’s not really a good thing.

“Seize the day” is a strange choice of words in the new Cyberpunk trailer on multiple fronts, but many fans will likely be excited to be reminded that Cyberpunk’s release is only just around the corner, and many more will be highly anticipating finally seeing Night City come to life when the game releases this November. Whether or not CD Projekt Red can deliver the truly next-generation RPG experience the studio aims to remains to be seen.
