TV movie Dallas: J.R. Returns revived the legendary series years after it came to an end, and here’s how it explained J.R.’s survival after his seemingly fatal final scene on the show. Dallas debuted in 1978 and focuses on the Ewings, a rich Texas family who own an oil company, and it originally started as a limited miniseries. Dallas proved so popular it later became a series, and ultimately ran for fourteen seasons. It also received a hugely successful spinoff with Knots Landing, which itself ran for fourteen seasons before coming to an end in 1993.

Dallas was a soap opera through and through, with much of the drama driven by brothers Bobby (Patrick Duffy) and J.R. (Larry Hagman). The latter proved to be insanely popular with viewers and was the center of the show’s most iconic storyline “Who shot J.R.?” where the character was shot in the season 3 finale by an unseen assistant, and viewers had to wait over eight months for the series to reveal the answer. Dallas’s two-part final episode “Conundrum” was a major event in 1991, and revolved around J.R. after he’s lost control of his businesses and his loved ones have essentially abandoned him

J.R. is then visited by a spirit named Adam (Joel Grey), and they embark on an It’s Wonderful Life-inspired trip through the past to see what would have happened if J.R. had never been born. It’s eventually revealed Adam is a demon, not an angel, and he tries to goad J.R. in shooting himself. The Dallas finale ended with J.R. raising the gun to his head and cutting to Bobby hearing a shot, who then runs to J.R.’s room and stares in horror at something offscreen, stating “Oh my god.” The clear implication is J.R. shot himself, but the cast reunited five years later for the TV movie Dallas: J.R. Returns, which – spoiler alert – featured J.R. returning.

The story for Dallas: J.R. Returns reveals the title character spent years in Europe following the events of the finale, and he comes back to regain control of Ewing Oil. In his first scene with Bobby, it’s also revealed what happened in the finale; J.R. shot the mirror where Adam appeared instead of himself. He then mumbled something about the Devil to Bobby and then quickly took off for Europe the next day, with the two having had little contact in the years that followed.

Dallas: J.R. Returns provided a simple but effective explanation for J.R.’s survival, and this TV movie was later followed by the 1998 sequel War Of The Ewings. Dallas the series was later revived with both Hagman and Duffy returning, and while it ignored the events of the TV movies, it did keep the implication J.R. had just shot the mirror.
