Now known for playing James Bond in the James Bond franchise, Daniel Craig has accidentally ended up becoming rather typecast: stony-faced action hero who has absolutely no need to look at an explosion. He apparently tried to get out of his role eventually but hasn’t managed it so far.

We’ve delved into his career (both inside and out of the world of 007) and ranked his five best films ever and compared them to his five worst, according to their IMDb average. This list includes all the roles that have either put Craig front and center, as well as a few smaller parts that have become very well-known for his involvement.

10 BEST: Skyfall (7.7)

The James Bond films that Daniel Craig has been involved in are known for their inability to keep up with the brilliance of Casino Royale when he first signed up to the franchise.

However, with all the force of an Adele-penned theme tune and a revitalized performance from Craig, Skyfall was a return to quality.

9 WORST: Cowboys & Aliens (6.0)

Directed by a man who created The Mandalorian for Disney+ and starring Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford and Olivia Wilde, you’d expect some seriously big things from Cowboys & Aliens, right?

Well, the sci-fi western missed the mark hugely, ending up as a box office disappointment and pretty much totally average in the eyes of critics.

8 BEST: The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (7.8)

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, in book form, is considered to be one of the greatest contemporary thrillers in existence. It spawned a fantastic franchise full of twists and turns around every corner.

The film adaptation did the novel justice, with Craig delivering a stellar performance in the central role as Mikael Blomkvist, capturing the essence of the character without ever having you think you’re watching a dodgy Bond rip-off.

7 WORST: The Invasion (5.9)

Despite bringing Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman together for what should have been an interesting, unique horror film, The Invasion ended up losing money.

Visually, the film is great, but it allows story and tension to be overwhelmed by unnecessary moments of over-the-top action and unnecessary storyline meandering.

6 BEST: Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens (7.9)

Typically, a cameo wouldn’t be enough to make a list of this sort. However, Daniel Craig’s appearance in The Force Awakens was both important enough to be considered, and a huge point of interest around the world when it was shown to be him.

We never see his face, but if you listen closely, you can tell that it is Craig’s voice coming from inside the helmet of a First Order trooper. He provides us with the first piece of proof that Rey is powerful enough to perform Jedi mind tricks.

5 WORST: Obsession (5.2)

Long before he ever put on his 007 suit, Daniel Craig was fronting the French-German film Obsession. All the way back in 1997, he was fresh-faced and relatively inexperienced.

It’s a pretty bland tale of a love triangle, but it was strangely well-received upon release. It has been retrospectively panned by critics and IMDb alike.

4 BEST: Casino Royale (8.0)

Craig’s best James Bond film is, and will probably always be, the first: Casino Royale. It’s the first story Ian Fleming ever came up with for the titular secret agent and was first made into a film just a few years after its publication.

However, the 2006 version adds a new level of sincerity, with a huge budget for explosions and big-name actors, and achieved a box office response that proved audiences were interested in Bond once more.

3 WORST: Love & Rage (5.1)

Another film taken from Daniel Craig’s earlier, pre-Bond career is Love & Rage. It is another romantic drama, with Craig involved in a love triangle.

His acting is, as ever, absolutely fine, but the film loses itself in its own sense of melodramatic over-the-top-ness.

2 BEST: Knives Out (8.0)

Out of nowhere, Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson dropped the best mystery film in years. He gathered an impressive ensemble cast that includes the likes of Daniel Craig, Jamie Lee Curtis and Chris Evans, threw them in a room, and had them investigate a gripping murder.

The film was given an overwhelmingly positive response, thanks to Johnson’s impressive ability to breathe new life into the age-old tropes of the murder mystery genre, and the film will be getting a (not particularly necessary) sequel at some point.

1 WORST: Kings (5.0)

2017’s Kings sees Daniel Craig return to the romantic roots of the worst films of his earlier career. Craig and Halle Berry play an unlikely couple during the Rodney King riots.

The film itself may pride itself on its historical accuracy and poignance, but the end result is nothing more than a quite boring, uninteresting and unnecessary film.
