Daniel Craig assured audiences that his upcoming role in Macbeth would differ greatly from the Denzel Washington-led The Tragedy of Macbeth. A timeless story of madness, political ambition (and proper hand hygiene), Shakespeare’s Scottish play is first thought to be performed in 1606. There have been countless performances and renderings in the ensuing centuries. A notable recent adaptation was 2015’s Macbeth, starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard. The Scottish king has been portrayed by the likes of Laurence Olivier, Orson Welles, and Ian McKellan. Now Denzel Washington and Daniel Craig will be joining the impressive roster of actors to play the mad general-turned-king.

Joel Coen first announced his reimagining of the Scottish play in early 2019, with Washington and Frances McDormand joining the cast soon after. A24 and Apple TV+ are teaming up for the film’s release, which will screen in theaters and be available for streaming at home. Earlier this month, A24 revealed the trailer for The Tragedy of Macbeth, confirming the adaptation’s December release date. Macbeth made headlines again this month when it was announced that Daniel Craig and Ruth Negga would star in a stage performance of the famous tragedy. The play will run for 15 weeks on Broadway beginning in Spring of 2022.

Craig told the New York Times that the two upcoming Macbeth adaptations will be very different, allaying concerns that the projects would be in competition. The Bond actor humbled himself at the mention of the towering talent of Washington, saying he isn’t “worthy” of the comparison. Ultimately, Craig is ecstatic to be performing one of his favorite Shakespeare plays, which he praises for its difficulty and brevity. The more versions of the classic play, Craig says, the merrier. “God forbid I was ever in competition with Denzel Washington. Jesus. I don’t consider myself worthy. That doesn’t come into it. They’re going to be very different, clearly, but I don’t worry about those sorts of things. The more, the better.”

The vastly different performance styles of the twin Macbeths should help avert any comparisons between the two adaptations. According to the trailer, Coen’s version of the play looks to be a stark, expressionist imagining of the tragedy, with Coen choosing to shoot in black and white. The Broadway version, meanwhile, has the potential to be a more traditional rendering of the play, free of any cinematic wizardry. The co-stars will surely pull Macbeth in separate directions as well. Washington is paired with the intense veteran McDormand, whereas Ruth Negga (known for Loving and AMC’s Preacher) will be making her Broadway debut in the stage version.

Macbeth will notably be Daniel Craig’s first role following his tenure as James Bond. Craig will appear as Bond for the final time next month in the long-delayed No Time to Die, with Macbeth being the first chapter in his new career trajectory. The Bond ties persist, however; Macbeth is being produced by Bond honcho Barbara Broccoli. For those who don’t live near The Great White Way, Craig fans can look forward to his upcoming film appearances. He will star in two more films in Rian Johnson’s Knives Out franchise, and is also gearing up to star in Todd Field’s western thriller The Creed of Violence.
