Daredevil 10 Best Comic Issues Of The 2010s

The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen. The Man Without Fear. Daredevil AKA Matt Murdock has been known by many names. But the 2010s were such an adventurous, exciting decade that he did venture out beyond Hell’s Kitchen and even got a taste of real fear.

The character’s popularity was already soaring in the television space with Charlie Cox playing the Marvel superhero on a Netflix series. As for the comics, Daredevil went through several changes. Along with the classic red costume, he also started donning darker shades. And in a few arcs, the morally just lawyer and vigilante even ended up being a villainous foe to heroes like Spider-Man and Iron Fist.

10 Know Fear (Daredevil Vol 6 #1-5)

Daredevil 10 Best Comic Issues Of The 2010s

Kicking off Chip Zdarky’s most recent run on the character, Know Fear finds Daredevil at his breaking point. Years of trauma and violence have exhausted him to such an extent that he feels like retiring for good. However, when he takes the blame for the death of a criminal, he must race against time to clear his name.

The narrative is perfectly suited for modern audiences, as it gives an edgier and grim perspective of the character. For years, The Man Without Fear has been serving as the guardian of Hell’s Kitchen. But for how long will he continue being Daredevil? Given how Netflix’s Daredevil and its lead character have also addressed similar themes, fans of the live-action adaptation might enjoy reading this five-issue storyline.

9 Daredevil Vs Punisher: Seventh Circle (Limited Series)

Daredevil 10 Best Comic Issues Of The 2010s

One of Matt Murdock’s legal cases turns awry when his friend/enemy Punisher shows up to kill the defendant. Both Daredevil and Punisher have been at loggerheads on many occasions, largely due to their difference in battling crime. Repeated examples have shown that some of the best Punisher stories from the comics do include Daredevil.

This time too, they are forced to face off in an unlikely battle with Daredevil ready with his punches and Frank Castle loading his bullets. Fans of their comic book rivalry or the Netflix series’ sophomore season would enjoy reading this limited series as well.

8 Cage Match (One-Shot)

Daredevil 10 Best Comic Issues Of The 2010s

Set before the Shadowland saga, Daredevil faces off against one of the fellow members of the Defenders, Luke Cage. The one-shot delivers exactly what it promises: an intense duel in the fighting ring. The fight comes out of a petty spat between the two heroes as they boast their fighting skills and superhuman abilities.

Daredevil has had a traumatic history with boxing given his father’s career and subsequent death. Seeing Daredevil back in the ring using his hand-to-hand combat skills for a trivial fight is an interesting story given how it is something that Daredevil would hardly do in his normal senses. This sudden transition in his mood hints towards a changing Daredevil in Shadowland.

7 Back In Black: Chinatown (Daredevil Vol 1 #1-5)

Daredevil 10 Best Comic Issues Of The 2010s

Back In Black’s first volume marked a new beginning for Daredevil as he started working for the District Attorney’s office. Protecting his home turf in New York comes with its own set of challenges. His legal battles are equally interesting as this time, Matt Murdock isn’t functioning under his own law firm.

As the title suggests, Daredevil also ditches his usual red suit for a stealthy black option. This costume went on to be his preferred choice in numerous other comics of the decade. The introduction of Blindspot as Daredevil’s new apprentice adds more dimensions to the hero’s growing maturity.

6 Shadowland (Crossover)

Daredevil 10 Best Comic Issues Of The 2010s

As Daredevil becomes the leader of the Hand Ninja clan, his methods get more and more extreme by the day. The man who questioned violence wasn’t thinking twice before killing Bullseye and building a temple and prison called Shadowland. His dubious methods draw him to conflict with street-level heroes like Moon Knight and Spider-Man.

The miniseries and its several tie-ins show that despite his calm demeanor, Daredevil can also falter in his pursuit of justice. Even though the reasons behind his actions are revealed later in the story, Daredevil knows that he must face the consequences of his actions.

5 Deadpool: Suicide Kings (Limited Series)

Daredevil 10 Best Comic Issues Of The 2010s

Daredevil and the fast-talking mercenary Deadpool have shared a love-hate relationship. Even though Deadpool engages in wanton violence that goes against Daredevil’s morals, the vigilante is still willing to team up with him when required. In Suicide Kings, Deadpool is wrongly framed for an act of terrorism resorting to Daredevil’s legal help.

To raise the stakes, the story also throws in Punisher who’s furious as usual. Unwilling to compromise with the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen, the one-man army ends up brutally dismembering Deadpool’s hands. In this case, Daredevil has to play the mediator between his two ‘frenemies’. This leads to a change in tone for a typically dark Daredevil comic book story, as the usually-brooding hero has a few moments to lighten up.

4 Daredevil: Reborn (Limited Series)

Daredevil 10 Best Comic Issues Of The 2010s

Set in the aftermath of Shadowland, Daredevil decides to take a detour from Hell’s Kitchen. Instead, his heart takes him to Mexico where he helps a blind boy fend off his bullies. He also gets involved in a small town’s politics and fights off a corrupt police force. The life lessons that he picks up in his Mexican journey inspire him to get back to New York and continue his vigilant activities.

Reborn lives up to its name and serves as an introspective break for the crime-fighter. The best of heroes deserve some time off, and Daredevil did need such a journey for self-awareness given his extreme nature in Shadowland.

3 Man Without Fear: The Death of Daredevil (Limited Series)

Daredevil 10 Best Comic Issues Of The 2010s

When Daredevil succumbs to his injuries, the rest of Hell’s Kitchen feels the aftermath of this tragedy. The Defenders take care of the crime-fighting while his main comic book villain Wilson Fisk (now also elected as Mayor) celebrates the demise of his archnemesis. But when another Guardian Devil is spotted in the city, a deeper mystery is unearthed.

The Death of Daredevil is a perfect example to showcase the relevance of Hell’s Kitchen in the life of its vigilante. Ever since the character’s creation, the New York district has played an integral part in making him who he is. So, even when he dies, the neighborhood continues to feel his presence in some way or the other.

2 Blind Man’s Bluff (Daredevil Vol 5 #8-9)

Daredevil 10 Best Comic Issues Of The 2010s

Following his villainous turn in Shadowland, Daredevil enters a deal with Wilson Fisk to wipe off everyone’s memory of him. With his newfound identity, he joins forces with Spider-Man. Even though both New Yorkers have collaborated earlier, Spider-Man has no recollection about his former ally.

As they embark on an adventure together, they fight against evil ninjas and exchange fashion advice for each other’s costumes. It is a light-hearted segue from the relatively darker Shadowland. Still, Daredevil finally opens up to Spider-Man about the memory erasure. This makes for an emotional moment between the two heroes.

1 Dark Nights (Limited Series)

Dark Nights is an anthology of several short stories that highlight Daredevil’s bravery in times of need. If one story talks about an alien invasion in New York, the other would deal with a girl requiring a heart transplant in the middle of a blizzard.

The diversity of stories is what makes Dark Nights a mixed bag of emotions. From dealing with everyday issues to superhuman threats, Daredevil gives it his best to fight crime both as a costumed hero and as a lawyer. He might be lurking in the shadows away from the public eye but deep down he cares for the people around him.
