Daredevil In No Way Home Is Bigger For The MCU Than Maguire & Garfield

Charlie Cox has been confirmed as the MCU’s Daredevil, making his chances of appearing in Spider-Man: No Way Home even higher – and it would be an even bigger deal for the MCU than the rumored appearances of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men. The Multiverse-opening story of No Way Home is set to bring numerous villains from past Spider-Man movies up against Tom Holland’s Wall-Crawler. These will include Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock, and Jamie Foxx’s Electro, among other villains.

Combined with discussions surrounding Charlie Cox returning in the film as Matt Murdock from Netflix’s Daredevil, Spider-Man: No Way Home continues to be hyped up as the Spider-Man movie to end all Spider-Man movies. While Maguire and Garfield’s rumored appearances are driving much of the excitement for No Way Home, Cox appearing as Matt Murdock would actually be the most significant for the MCU. The reason being is that a Daredevil appearance could finally provide an answer to the nature of Marvel’s now-canceled Netflix shows next to the MCU films.

During their runs, Marvel’s various Netflix series, including Daredevil, had a rather nebulous connection to the MCU. While the shows would periodically drop references to MCU events or characters, the movies never did the same from their end. Since the cancellation of every Marvel-Netflix series, there’s never been a clear-cut answer given as to whether the shows actually do occupy the MCU or exist in their own separate continuity. With Charlie Cox’s potential appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home, even something as relatively minor as a brief Matt Murdock cameo can definitively answer that question at last – something that Tobey Maguire and Andre Garfield’s roles can’t achieve.

All told, three possibilities exist for how Matt’s potential Spider-Man: No Way Home appearance could happen. Either he might be another character warped into the MCU through the Multiverse like the Spider-Man villains, a completely rebooted Matt Murdock, or the same Matt from Daredevil. Either of the first two possibilities would confirm the Marvel-Netflix shows as a separate universe, while the third would effectively canonize Daredevil in the MCU, and with it, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Punisher. In either event, the mystery of the Marvel-Netflix connection, or lack thereof, to the MCU would finally be resolved.

Cox’s Daredevil isn’t the only character from Marvel’s Netflix shows thought to be about to appear in an upcoming MCU property, either. Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk aka the Kingpin is also rumored to have a role in Disney+’s Hawkeye, and questions also remain as to whether he’s the same Kingpin seen on Daredevil. At the same time, the Multiverse elements of Spider-Man: No Way Home coupled with the possible role Charlie Cox’s Daredevil could have in the MCU may allow for Marvel’s televised franchises to finally become one cohesive entity.
