Dark Souls Firelink Shrine Who Will Betray You (& Who Wont)

FromSoftware’s Dark Souls franchise exploded into popularity not only because of its engaging and difficult gameplay but because of its complex lore. Players will traverse the entire world of each Dark Souls game with a genuine possibility of having no clue what they’re doing or why. Those who want those questions answered need to explore each game’s item descriptions, environments, and, of course, characters. However, not every single one of Dark Souls’ NPCs is exactly friendly, so who do players need to watch out for when interacting with in-game acquaintances at Firelink Shrine?

Some of these characters are so beloved, fans have made impressive Dark Souls cosplays to show their love for the series. A part of the reason they’re so likable is that most of the characters in the Dark Souls series have dynamic stories that can end differently depending on the actions chosen by the player. Oftentimes continuing with their questlines results in rare loot and equipment unobtainable elsewhere in the game. While this certainly helps make the Dark Souls series more interesting on repeat playthroughs, it does blur the line between ally and foe more than once.

Although there are a plethora of characters in Dark Souls, only characters who show their face at Firelink Shrine will be included here. There’s plenty of lovable characters in the game like Solaire, but they never quite reach Firelink. For the sake of simplicity, this article will only focus on those who show up to the hub area at some point during their questlines. With that simple rule out of the way, here are the NPCs in the Firelink Shrine that will betray you, and those who will not.

Dark Souls Characters Who Are Friendly To The End

The first character players can meet that will never betray them is Anastacia of Astora who lives in a cell beneath the bonfire. She won’t speak since her tongue has been cut off, but she will benefit the player by leveling up their Estus Flasks in exchange for Fire Keeper souls. She is one herself, so it’s her job to do so.

Before heading off to Sens’s Fortress, players will notice a giant snake known as Frampt hanging out where the Firelink shrine pool once stood. He’ll explain that he sees the player as the chosen one and beg for them to link the fire. If the Player sides with Kaathe instead of him, he’ll call them a “sorry fool” and then leave for the entire game. Since he doesn’t resist the player in any way, this is a situation in which the player betrays an NPC, if anything.

There’s also Reah of Thorolund, who is paired with Petrus, Vince, and Nico. This set of clerics are on a quest of some kind, but she’s actually the only one in this group of characters who do not betray you in the end. Her bodyguards end up hollowed in the Tomb of the Giants, and Petrus set them up down there on purpose with the intent of killing her. Nico and Vince attack on sight due to their insanity, and Petrus will attack the player after helping her return from the Catacombs. Saving her unlocks the opportunity to buy powerful miracles, so it’s well worth anyone’s time if they are a faith class in Dark Souls.

Siegmeyer is the father of Sieglinde in Dark Souls, and their quests intertwine with each other. Players will first meet Siegmeyer in front of the gate of Sen’s Fortress and Sieglinde by the Crystal Caves. Eventually, during this questline, they both end up appearing at the Firelink Shrine and players need to interact with them to continue the quest. Unfortunately, Siegmeyer ends up dying at the end of the quest if it’s done properly, but players can snag a useful Titanite Slab down at Ashen Lake out of the deal.

Dark Souls Characters Who Will Betray You In The End

If there’s any character who is instantly thought of when it comes to Dark Soul betrayals, it’s Patches. Showing up in multiple FromSoftware games, Patches never once had any intention of playing nice with anyone who crossed his path. He’ll flip the bridge in the Catacombs while players are walking on it and he’ll push them into a pit in the Tomb of the Giants hoping to steal the player’s loot after death.

There’s also Lautrec, who can be saved from his prison in the Undead Parish. It’s wise to kill him immediately afterward or else he will kill the aforementioned Anastacia and render the bonfire useless. Players get a chance for revenge in Anor Londo, and the firekeeper can be revived after defeating him and his goons.

The remaining characters technically do not betray the player, but they end up losing their sanity and attacking them, like Vince and Nico. After saving him from his cell in Sen’s Fortress, Big Hat Logan’s quest for knowledge ultimately leads him to the Duke’s Archives and it’s there that he loses his sanity. He ends up in another cell at this point, but he’ll enjoy studying once the player sets him free. After buying all his powerful magic in Dark Souls and exhausting his dialogue, he will go hollow and attack the player at Seath’s original boss encounter room.

Logan’s apprentice, Griggs, will follow his master after he departs for the Duke’s Archives. Unfortunately for him, he meets his doom in the Sen’s Fortress and ends up going hollow which means he will attack the player on sight. Even Laurentius, the pyromancer, will end up going hollow and fighting the player if his quest is completed. As soon as players inform him about the powerful chaos pyromancy spells in the swamp, he’ll head down to Blighttown where he too will go hollow.

These games are extremely morbid in tone, and their NPCs reflect that fact, so it’s important to be cautious when interacting with the many characters in Dark Souls.
