Dark Souls What Praise The Sun Means (& Why Its So Popular Among Fans) Related Will There Be A Dark Souls 4

Dark Souls is a game about a dying world that’s fallen to madness. Only remnants of once great civilizations remain and even those have become corrupted. Be it gods, demons, dragons, or even gravity, Dark Souls contains countless challenges that can make even the most hardened players want to give up. Despite these grim themes and, at times, seemingly unfair challenges, Dark Souls continues to have an avid fan base.

The reason for this is surprisingly simple. Despite its dark themes, Dark Souls is actually a game about getting past the challenges it throws at players, rather than getting defeated by them. This “light at the end of the tunnel” style of gameplay not only makes the game beloved by fans, but it’s also led to many of the things that light up this dreary game becoming so iconic that even people who aren’t fans can recognize them.

One of the first moments in Dark Souls that gives players a sense of hope is found after a boss called the Taurus Demon. It’s when players meet a surprisingly optimistic fellow named Solaire of Astora. He’s an NPC related to the Warriors of Sunlight covenant in the game and he offers to help players on their journey. For many fans that struggled through bosses on their first playthrough, he and a few other Dark Souls NPCs alone are what got them through it. Besides his friendly attitude though, what he’s most famous for is the gesture he performs whenever he’s summoned for some jolly cooperation.

Where The Praise The Sun Memes Come From

When Solaire is summoned to help a player in a boss fight in Dark Souls he will arrive performing a rather silly looking gesture called Praise the Sun, where his arms are stretched upwards in a V shape. Players can receive this gesture from interacting with the Warriors of Sunlight covenant statue, and they can then join the covenant themselves. If they do they will begin receiving Sunlight Medals through cooperative gameplay, which can mainly be gained by either getting help from Solaire or helping other players online. It’s perhaps thanks to this friendly process of receiving the gesture that it’s often used in the game as a way for players to express things like confidence or success. It even became such a well-known phrase that it escaped the orange co-operative messages of Dark Souls and made it’s way to the real world.

To the fans of Dark Souls, Praise the Sun has many meanings. It can be a gesture that’s used to celebrate playing with friends, it can literally be used to show areas where the sun is especially beautiful, and it can even be used to show love for the NPC Solaire. Despite these many ways that fans might interpret the gesture/phrase though, they all have one thing in common. Praise the Sun is always used to show the best and brightest parts of a dark and challenging game, which is why it’s so popular, not only among Dark Souls fans, but in video game culture as a whole.
