Darkseid didn’t mince his words when he first met Thanos, immediately letting him know that he’s a “pale imitation” of him. The Ruler of Apokolips and the Mad Titan, the two biggest villains in their respective universes, actually crossed paths in the comics in a Marvel and DC Comics crossover. Darkseid wasn’t thrilled to meet Thanos, as he immediately called him out for being a lesser version of himself.
Darkseid made his comic debut three years before his Marvel Comics counterpart. Darkseid and Thanos are often compared due to their similarities. Both are the most powerful villains in their domain who seek the greatest power the which will give them control of reality, as Darkseid seeks out the Anti-Life Equation, while Thanos is after the Infinity Stones. They even kind of look alike in certain interpretations of the characters. However, despite their alikeness, Thanos creator Jim Starlin said the Eternal wasn’t based on Darkseid, but instead was modeled after another powerful DC New God, Metron.
In Marvel Comics Versus DC #2 by Peter David, Claudio Castellini, Dan Jurgens, Paul Neary, Joseph Rubinstein, Bill Oakley, and Gregory Wright, two cosmic beings battle over the existence of the DC and Marvel Universe. Within the comic, tantalizing matchups such as The Flash vs. Quicksilver, Batman vs. Captain America, Superman vs. Hulk, and more played out, as winners of the bouts were decided by the creative team and reader voting. While Thanos and Darkseid weren’t among the matchups, the pair did meet in the crossover. Thanos offers Darkseid a wager on the outcome of their respective universes, but is met with being told “I wager, you pale imitation of me… that you will lose.”
Darkseid and Thanos would ultimately be attacked by the Marvel and DC heroes once they figured out to stop fighting and work together. But after the two god-like cosmic beings fighting over the Marvel and DC Universe agree to a truce, both comic universes are returned to the previous status quo. Both Thanos and Darkseid are subsequently split away from each other and return to their own realities.
It’s too bad readers never got the chance to see Darkseid and Thanos have their own slugfest in the comics. It seems highly unlikely DC and Marvel Comics will ever officially crossover again, but if they do, a fight between the two villains is a must. Still, Darkseid’s insult of calling Thanos a lesser version of himself was perfect and biting. Surely, Thanos would love to prove he’s so much more than a poor man’s Darkseid.
