Darth Vaders Deadliest Weapon Isnt His Lightsaber

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Star Wars #17!

Darth Vader proved that he’s deadlier in his TIE fighter than he is with his lightsaber shortly after the events of A New Hope. In one epic battle, the Sith Lord shoots down more even squadrons of X-Wings while in flight than he strikes down Rebels with his saber on the ground.

Upon making the startling discovery that the pilot who destroyed the then-first-and-only Death Star is the son he never knew he had, Vader understandably begins a relentless campaign to search for him. It doesn’t take long before the fallen Jedi obtains the coveted information he’s long been seeking — Luke Skywalker is on the planet Vrogas Vas. But upon arriving there in his TIE fighter, the Dark Lord learns Luke is not there alone, having just inadvertently stumbled upon a Rebel base swarming with people who want him dead. A rather intense dogfight quickly ensues whereby Vader is forced to contend with numerous X-Wings on his own but successfully destroys two entire squadrons. His bloodbath, however, is brought to a very ceremonious end when Luke careens his fighter into Vader’s, sending the two spiraling to the ground below, in 2015’s Star Wars: Vader Down by Kieron Gillen and writer Jason Aaron, penciller and inker Mike Deodato, colorist Frank Martin and letterer Joe Caramagna.

Once downed, Vader faces a litany of armed Rebels and tanks, and the most devastation he heralds happens when he uses the Force to detonate as many Thermal Detonators being worn by Rebels as possible, a rather devious tactic that shrouds him in a sea of debris (and most likely blood) in 2015’s Darth Vader #13 by Jason Aaron and writer Kieron Gillen, artist Salvador Larroca, colorist Edgar Delgado and letterer Joe Caramagna. Darth Vader does wield his lightsaber during this unequal confrontation and hits a tank with a blast he deflects. But then the Sith Lord disappears within the smog that comes as a result of the destruction he has caused and escapes, rarely using his lightsaber again during the entire deadly exchange.

The Sith Lord later proves his proficiency behind the controls of his TIE fighter again after The Empire Strikes Back in 2020’s Star Wars and Darth Vader series. After famously toying with Luke on Cloud City, the Sith Lord engages Luke in his TIE fighter with the intent to kill and would have succeeded had the Empire not intervened in Darth Vader #16. Even though Luke later returns the favor to Darth Vader in Star Wars #17 by shooting him down, it’s crucial to point out Darth Vader clearly loses against his son in their final lightsaber duel during Return of the Jedi. Luke was no match for Vader during The Empire Strikes Back, so their lightsaber duel was rightfully one-sided and therefore doesn’t accurately measure Vader’s deadly precision with his Sith blade. Luke is much more evenly matched with his father during their fight on the second Death Star. The fact that Luke is the clear victor here proves Vader is less capable with his lightsaber.

Darth Vader obviously brings more devastation to the Rebels in a TIE fighter than he does with his lightsaber before The Empire Strikes Back. He garners the same results with his matches against Luke later on. Vader first downs his son’s X-Wing in his TIE fighter before Return of the Jedi (not counting Luke’s win afterward since Vader clearly would have killed him had the Empire not saved Luke the first time) before failing to defeat Luke in a lightsaber battle on the second Death Star. Darth Vader might be formidable with his lightsaber but not as much as when he’s manning a TIE fighter.
