Darth Vader’s Failure Doomed The Second Death Star BEFORE A New Hope

Before the construction of the first Death Star was completed, Darth Vader fails to stop a rogue Jedi named Ferren Barr from setting crucial events in motion that lead to the destruction of the Empire’s second planet-destroying battle station.

After Revenge of the Sith, Emperor Palpatine tasks Vader with investigating whether a Jedi is advising the Mon Calamari during negotiations with the Empire, in 2018’s Darth Vader #13 by writer Charles Soule, artist Giuseppe Camuncoli, inker Daniele Orlandini, colorist David Curiel and letterer Joe Caramagna. The Mon Calamari obviously want to avoid conflict, but the Jedi Barr is trying his best to keep the two sides from achieving peace. Upon Vader’s arrival on Mon Cala, negotiations haven’t made any progress but are far from over, but then the shuttle carrying the Imperial ambassador is destroyed, escalating the tension between both sides.

It’s later discovered in Darth Vader #17 that Barr orchestrated the destruction of the Imperial shuttle to ensure Mon Cala never reached peace, to ensure a vision he foresaw about the Mon Calamari. Barr is able to secure the trust of the Mon Calamari because he assures them their planet will be instrumental in the Empire’s destruction. What Barr fails to divulge is when. He knows that far into the future, the Mon Calamari will lead a great rebellion against the Empire and that their ships will become synonymous with peace and liberation. It’s true because under the leadership of the Mon Calamari known as General Ackbar during Return of the Jedi, the Rebellion successfully destroys the second Death Star. The fact that Ackbar appears in 2018’s Darth Vader and escapes after Barr’s meddling serves as further evidence that he actually foresaw the destruction of the second Death Star.

Even though Darth Vader arrives on Mon Cala mere moments before the ambassador’s shuttle explodes, he witnesses the spectacle and even locks eyes with the ambassador before the officer boards his coffin. And yet, Vader doesn’t sense anything wrong, even though a Jedi has orchestrated the entire operation. Palpatine has tasked Vader with learning whether a Jedi is helping the Mon Calamari and dispose of the Jedi if there were any, and yet he witnesses his Jedi target succeed in killing the Imperial ambassador. Because of that failure, the Mon Calamari rise up and are destined to help the Rebellion destroy the second Death Star, even before the completion of the first Death Star.

Even though Vader might not have enough time to stop Barr from destroying the Imperial shuttle, Barr still divulges his entire plan to the Sith Lord before his death, so Vader obviously knows that the Mon Calamari will play a massive role in his Empire’s destruction. Either Vader doesn’t report these findings to Palpatine, or he does and fails in hunting down the remaining Calamari to prevent Barr’s prophecy from coming true. Even though it’s intriguing that Star Wars created an event that foretold the destruction of the second Death Star before the first was even built, what’s even more compelling is the possibility that Darth Vader does share this prophecy with the emperor. As comic fans know, the Sith Lord later turns against Palpatine during 2020’s Darth Vader, which transpires after The Empire Strikes Back. Perhaps Darth Vader was already plotting Palpatine’s demise before the first Death Star was even operational.
