Darth Vader’s Inquisitors Fulfilled the Jedi’s Darkest Prophecy

Star Wars comics have introduced one of the darkest Jedi lullabies, which seems to actually be a prophecy of sorts – fulfilled by Darth Vader.

In a sinister twist, Star Wars comics have revealed Darth Vader’s Inquisitors were the ultimate fulfillment of the Jedi’s darkest prophecy. The Star Wars franchise is expanding at a prodigious rate, with Lucasfilm Publishing currently exploring the High Republic Era – a period some 200 years before the events of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. This is a time when the Jedi and the Republic were at their height, but the shadow of the dark side still lurked in the shadows.

Star Wars: The High Republic’s tie-ins have introduced a sinister Jedi lullaby that actually seems to be a prophecy, although the Jedi have forgotten it. “Shrii ka rai ka rai,” it goes, “We’re coming to take you away… They’ll do what they can, and they’ll do what they must, but when they do find you all you’ll be is… dust.” Apparently, one Jedi Master named Vidyarvrikt used to sing it to Younglings to scare them to sleep, presumably in part to force them to confront the feelings of abandonment the children must have faced after being taken from their parents. But this grim nursery rhyme actually seems to be inspired by a real creature, a Force predator once common across the galaxy that is possibly the real reason the Jedi began taking children in the first place; because they could remove the Younglings to a safe environment where these beasts could not get at them.

It is even more chilling to realize, however, that Darth Vader and his Inquisitors effectively became the embodiment of this lullaby. In the aftermath of Order 66, Darth Vader and his Inquisitors were tasked to hunt down any and all surviving Jedi Knights. But that was not their only task; as seen in Star Wars Rebels, and discussed in several tie-ins, they were also charged with combing the galaxy looking for young Force-sensitives. Darth Vader hunted Force-sensitive children on backwater worlds, while his Inquisitors regularly visited orphanages looking for any trace of the Force and stealing those children away in the dead of night; the people running the orphanages simply assumed they were runaways when in reality they had been taken away.

Just as in the lullaby, Darth Vader and his Inquisitors searched out Force-sensitives and took them away. With the power of the dark side at their command, and no Jedi to stand in their way, there was nothing any parent or philanthropist could do to stop them. There was only one crucial difference between the lullaby and the actions of Darth Vader and his Inquisitors; no parent or guardian ever managed to find any of the Younglings they had kidnapped. That was because, unlike the Force predators who preyed upon children in times so long ago even the Jedi have forgotten them, they had a purpose beyond feeding. Palpatine was working on Project Harvester, which aimed to identify and capture Force-sensitive children and train them as spies who could use their powers to see events across the galaxy. The Emperor believed that by doing so, he could identify any and all potential threats to his reign.

So, in a way, Darth Vader and his Inquisitors played a dark role from a lullaby that had terrified generations of children, stealing them away in the dead of night. They became the Force predators of legend, not looking for food, but instead seeking only to satisfy the Emperor’s insatiable appetite for power. It’s no surprise that Darth Vader would be responsible for one of the most sinister twists in Star Wars lore.
