Dave Bautista has shared that he’d like to team up with Jason Momoa to make a Lethal Weapon-style buddy cop movie. Bautista is hot off Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead and will next be seen in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, while Momoa will next be seen in Sweet Girl. Both actors appear in Villeneuve’s Dune, as well as the Apple+ original series See season 2, which debuts on August 27th, 2021.

The Lethal Weapon film franchise began with the original feature film in 1987 starring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. Since then, the franchise has spawned four films and a TV series starring Damon Wayans, Clayne Crawford and Seann William Scott, which ran for three seasons. Currently, there are no plans to continue the franchise.

Bautista took to Twitter to toss out the idea of making a Lethal Weapon-style movie with both Momoa and director David Leitch. The concept, as is the case with the actual Lethal Weapon series, would be a buddy cop movie with the two actors, seemingly as partners. While Leitch is currently at work on the Brad Pitt-led Bullet Train and Momoa is filming Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, there’s potential that all parties could be free for such an endeavor down the line. Bautista himself is currently tied up filming Rian Johnson’s Knives Out sequel and then heads off to play Drax again for director James Gunn in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, but the idea is no less an intriguing one. Just going to throw this out into the atmosphere and see what happens. Here we go… Me and Momoa in a Lethal Weapon type buddy cop movie directed by David Leitch. Ok! There it is. Now we wait.😬

After the death of Lethal Weapon director Richard Donner, the prospects of the franchise continuing with the original stars seemingly came to an end. However, the buddy cop or buddy duo team-up genre is alive and well, as demonstrated by the previously mentioned Hobbs & Shaw, as well as 2020’s Bad Boys For Life, which was the highest grossing movie of 2020 (with Covid-19 factored in). Godzilla vs. Kong is another team-up that brought massive success, even if the leads weren’t human, making the concept of a strong duo a potentially lucrative one.

With both Bautista and Momoa already having worked together on multiple projects, it’s perfectly feasible that they would team up yet again, this time for something more streamlined like Lethal Weapon. Neither star is a stranger to action films and having Leitch on board would certainly help exploit their big-screen presence together. Obviously, this is a purely speculative concept at this point, but stranger things have happened and with the popularity of both actors at their height, there’s no reason they can’t fish for a dream project on social media.
