Dave Filoni Explains Why Boba Fett Is Still Popular

Boba Fett has remained popular for years, and with the upcoming release of The Book of Boba Fett, writer/director Dave Filoni explains why he thinks the character has held such a high status in pop culture history. Designed by Star Wars creator George Lucas, along with art director Joe Johnston and illustrator Ralph McQuarrie, Boba Fett was introduced as a bounty hunter in 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back. The character became known for the capture of Han Solo at the behest of the crime lord Jabba the Hutt.

After being introduced to audiences, Boba Fett saw what appeared to be an ill-fated death in 1983’s Return of the Jedi. At least, that was until The Mandalorian season 2 revealed that Boba Fett had actually survived the Sarlacc pit and has been hiding out on Tatooine ever since. Prior to being reintroduced in The Mandalorian, he had only been featured on screen in the original trilogy for around six minutes. This limited time with audiences still catapulted the character from the armored bounty hunter freezing Han Solo in carbonite to pop-culture icon.

Disney to bringing back such an iconic character as Boba Fett through The Mandalorian ties the original films into the new Star Wars mythos. Now Filoni, who co-created Star Wars: The Clone Wars and developed The Mandalorian alongside Jon Favreau, reveals why he thinks the character has remained popular all these years. Speaking about The Book of Boba Fett with THR, Filoni says the character’s design has become “iconic.” Read the full quote below:

I think the design of the costume, especially the helmet, is iconic. The details, from the dent on the crown of the helmet, the emblems, scuff marks, cloak and braids all spoke of a greater story and adventure that the character had experienced. I think it was always fun to imagine what those adventures were. Now we get to tell some of them.

The Book of Boba Fett sees the return of actor Temuera Morrison as Fett after previously playing the character’s “father,” Jango, in Attack of the Clones. As with his depiction in The Mandalorian, Morrison will don the iconic helmet and armor he regained helping Din Djarin protect Grogu. The Book of Boba Fett season 1 is set to place the titular bounty hunter and his mercenary partner Fennec Shand, played by Ming-Na Wen, on the throne of Jabba the Hutt as they attempt to gain control over the territory he once controlled.

While it remains to be seen how the series will tie into the larger Star Wars universe that Filoni and Favreau have been building, the return of Boba Fett is something fans had long been waiting for. The character’s appearance in The Mandalorian was well received by fans, but many are hoping The Book of Boba Fett will finally explore the character in greater depth. Audiences don’t have to wait much longer to get a closer look at how this character became one of the most revered bounty hunters in the galaxy.
