The Pokémon anime has been airing for a long time now and still manages to keep Ash Ketchum away from retirement as the show’s protagonist. Regardless of one’s feelings for Ash, many will account for the years and years of journeys he’s been on with characters like Misty, May, and Dawn.

Although all three have left Ash with fond memories, Pokémon Diamond & Pearl’s resurgence, thanks to the remakes, have placed Dawn in the spotlight again. Despite Dawn’s chemistry with Ash being beloved amongst fans, many may forget the other Pokémon anime characters who originated from the games.

10 Dawn (Pokémon Diamond/Pearl) Wasn’t An Attention Seeker In The Anime & Was More Mature In The Games

Alongside her companion Piplup, Dawn served as a great continuation from the female partner trend for Ash, to the point where many feel she’s one of Ash’s companions they want back to accompany him on another journey. Although she could lose her temper sometimes, many remember Dawn for being a kind-hearted, non-attention-seeking individual.

Further, in Pokémon Diamond & Pearl, Dawn’s a lot closer to Professor Rowan, as she’s his assistant in those game titles if the gamers choose Lucas as their player character. Furthermore, she seems more mature and experienced as she’ll teach players how to catch Pokémon and battle.

9 Lyra (Pokémon Heartgold/Soulsilver) Was A Character Whose Romantic Interest In Male Protagonists Carried Over To The Anime

As much as fans love discussing the new Pokémon created for each generation, others love to discuss Pokémon relationships they stood behind in the anime concerning Ash and the ladies. One of these ladies could’ve been Lyra, the female protagonist of Pokémon Heartgold and Soulsilver.

In Pokémon Red and Blue, she dreams of wanting to journey out to become a powerful trainer despite being Cerulean City’s gym leader. In the sequel titles, Pokémon Gold and Silver, she’s shown to be dating someone. Too bad her date’s ruined by the gamer’s player character.

In Pokémon Red and Blue, Giovanni displays a more active role in pursuing his goals. Although he’s still a conniving, power-hungry individual in the anime, he’s willing to dip his hands into obtaining anything he feels will make him a ruler overall.

Many can assume Giovanni’s one of the worst anime parents concerning his relationship with his son, Silver, ending on bad terms, which isn’t in the main anime series. Regardless of how fans wish to interpret Giovanni, they’ll ultimately see him as a cruel mafia boss who seeks all the power in the world.

Like Zacian, a Pokémon that can take down a Titan with one slice, Sonia felt her childhood relationship with Leon ended once Chairman Rose started mentoring Leon.

Not much is different from her counterpart in Pokémon Sword and Shield as Sonia manages to remain intelligent, often bewildered, by the scenery around her. Besides traveling with Goh as one difference between the two, Sonia displays similar dreams and emotions shown in the games.

Like in the third generation Pokémon games she originated in, May was a charming, humble, and friendly individual and a daughter of one of the Hoenn region’s gym leaders. Although she does dabble in Pokémon contests in the games, her character is more lively in the anime as the story writers gave her rivals, dreams, and goals.

4 Guzma (Pokémon Sun/Moon) May Be An Outcast In The Game, But He’s A Deadly Pokémon Trainer In The Anime

Stealing Pokémon and seeking revenge through heinous activities because of his feelings toward the Alola region was Team Skull Boss Guzma’s code in Pokémon Sun and Moon. Arguably one of the best Pokémon villains in the games because of his delinquent attitude and failure livelihood, Guzma made sure his gangster hand motions and speeches impacted Pokémon fans.

In the anime, Guzma is more serious and relies on dirty tactics to secure a victory. Although Guzma likes to obey the rules, he can command his Pokémon to overkill an opponent’s creatures, as seen in his battle with Lana and her Primarina.

3 Iris (Pokémon Black/White) Is One Of Ash’s Female Companions That Became The Unova Region’s Champion In The Games

Despite having a bossy attitude and hilarious gag with Ash concerning his maturity, Iris manages to break away from mold like the other female companions Ash’s had before. Seeking to become a dragon master, Iris and Axew left their homeland to develop themselves before joining Ash and Cilan.

However, in the Unova region games, Iris goes on to accomplish more feats her anime counterpart could only dream of achieving. In Pokémon Black and White 2, Iris manages to defeat Alder, the champion players battle in Pokémon Black and White and becomes the region’s full-fledged champion.

2 Serena (Pokémon X/Y) Was A Bland Rival In The Games But A Dynamic & Stellar Companion For Ash In The Anime

Serena was a kind, friendly, and determined individual in Pokémon X and Y but lacked personal feelings that made her character stand out in these games. In the games, Serena was no different from the standard trainers in the overworld who’d battle the players who walked in front of them.

Unlike the games, Serena received a character overhaul in the anime. Instead of being a trainer who was upset after losing a battle, she learned from her defeats and aimed to better herself. Her feelings and history with Ash also sparked an intriguing dynamic for her character.

Although he may not be in New Pokémon Snap, many fans who played the original Pokémon Snap remember playing as him when trying to get the perfect shot of Pikachu riding a surfboard. Considering Professor Oak’s need for Todd to become his photographer, many assume that Todd is well-trained, intelligent, and critical regarding photography.

Further, the anime highlights Todd’s expertise by giving him some achievements under his belt before meeting Ash and friends, like capturing the photograph of Aerodactly, a Pokémon that’s extinct. Regardless of his famous feat, Todd only cared for his equipment and taking the perfect shot, as he disregarded Ash’s safety to get a perfect picture of Pikachu.
