Kevin Williamson’s Dawson’s Creek is known for having high school characters who act like they’re decades older… and many of the actors were way past their teenage years when filming. Between the dialogue and the situations that the main characters find themselves in, it’s easy to think that the Capeside gang is actually in their 20’s.

Dawson Leery (James Van Der Beek), Joey Potter (Katie Holmes), and Pacey Witter (Joshua Jackson) are part of a famous love triangle, but there’s another character who gets a lot of screen time, and that’s Jen Lindley (Michelle Williams). Jen is a great character but she definitely acts inappropriately at times. Here are 10 things about Jen on Dawson’s Creek that would never fly today.

10 Jen Isn’t Super Respectful Of Her Grams At First

Although Jen tries to politely tell her grandmother that she doesn’t believe in God and doesn’t want to go to church, Jen’s refusal to understand this part of her grandma’s life becomes more and more forceful as the first season progresses.

Jen isn’t that respectful of her Grams and this wouldn’t fly today. Jen shouldn’t say certain words that she knows will upset her Grams or try so hard to get a rise out of her. Watching a show like this today, fans would expect Jen and her grandmother to sit down and have a real conversation about their expectations for living together and their separate belief systems instead of being so passive-aggressive.

9 Jen’s Drinking Becomes Out Of Control

As Jen starts to feel worse about herself and her terrible family situation, from the fact that her parents don’t pay attention to her and her Grams isn’t happy with her lifestyle, Jen’s drinking becomes out of control. This is something that would never fly today because the other characters would see what was going on and try to help her.

After the first season of Dawson’s Creek when Jen is still fairly innocent, Jen takes a dark turn and it really seems like no one pays that much attention.

8 No One Seems To Care That Jen Starts Hanging Out With Abby, Who Is Bad News

When Jen and Abby Morgan (Monica Keena) become best friends, no one seems to care or even really notice very much. This isn’t something that would fly today because Abby is bad news and has been since the moment that she was introduced. Dawson’s Creek fans all remember how she mentioned Joey’s crush on Dawson in the season one episode “Detention.”

All Abby wanted to do was manipulate people, and she was a truly bad influence on Jen. Other characters should have been stronger about how much they disliked her.

7 Grams Forces Jen To Leave After Abby’s Death

When Abby dies, it’s a horrible tragedy that is totally shocking to watch. But instead of supporting Jen through this tough time, especially since her grandfather passed away recently as well, Grams forces Jen to leave the house. She doesn’t want her living there anymore.

This is wild to imagine because Jen has nowhere to go. Her parents don’t want her living in New York City with them and now Grams doesn’t want her, either? Dawson takes Jen in, but still, this isn’t something that a grandmother or any kind of relative should do.

6 She Spies On Her Therapist, Which Is Super Uncool

It’s tough for Jen when she starts thinking about what to do after high school. One way that she copes with her thoughts and feelings is seeing a therapist. In one season four episode, Jen spies on her therapist while she’s with Jack.

This would never fly today as it’s super uncool and unprofessional. There have to be boundaries in the patient/therapist relationship.

5 Jen And Pacey Consider A Casual Relationship

The whole “friends with benefits” thing is never a good idea but Jen and Pacey actually consider this in an early season of the show.

It’s an awkward storyline because a lot of fans never pictured them together since many feel that Pacey should always have been with Joey.

4 She Isn’t Sensitive To Joey When She And Dawson Date In Season One

Sure, when Jen moves to Capeside and starts dating Dawson in the first season of Dawson’s Creek, she doesn’t know Dawson or Joey very well. But literally anyone can tell that Joey is in love with Dawson, something that Jen totally ignores.

Even if Jen thinks that Dawson and Joey are just friends, she should be more sensitive to their bond. Instead, she doesn’t often care if Joey is the awkward third wheel, and this just doesn’t seem like something that would work today. High school friendships and relationships are as complicated as when people get older, and there would be more of a discussion about how things would work moving forward.

3 Jen Skips School And Lies About Why

In the fourth season, Joey and Jen both skip school and travel to New York City. Jen lies that she has a meeting at a college but she wants to go see her dad, who she has a strained relationship with.

This would never fly today as a “senior ditch day” may be a rite of passage on teen dramas but doesn’t exactly make parents and teachers very happy.

2 Jen Doesn’t Speak Like A Teenager And Stands Up To Any Kind Of Authority, Including Teachers

Does Jen sound like a teenager? Definitely not. There are so many scenes when she has a crazy vocabulary, and that just doesn’t make any sense. It’s not realistic. Something else about Jen that wouldn’t fly today is that she stands up to any kind of authority, including teachers.

In one scene, Jen talks about her sick grandpa and says that that life isn’t a “gift” and it sucks when someone is on their deathbed. This isn’t exactly what the teacher wants to hear and it’s not appropriate.

1 Jen Doesn’t Tell Her Friends About Her Heart Condition Until It’s Too Late

It’s a massive shock to Jen’s best friends that she has a heart condition that is going to kill her. This is the tragedy of the series finale, especially since she leaves behind her daughter Amy, who her best pal Jack will take care of. It’s a tough way for fans to say goodbye to this character.

Jen doesn’t tell her friends about her condition until it’s too late, something that would never fly today. She would absolutely have to tell people earlier than that. She wouldn’t want to hide it and she would want support. It also wouldn’t be possible to hide it because she would have shown signs of being sick whenever they hung out.
