Days Gone Creative Director Tells Fans To Buy Games At Full Price

The creative director for Days Gone recently expressed the opinion that if fans want more sequels to games that they love, then they should buy them at full price. This comes in the wake of a player petition reaching 30,000 signatures which asks for Sony to make a sequel to its 2019 exclusive.

When Days Gone launched nearly two years ago, it was met with a lukewarm critical reception despite doing well sales-wise out of the gate. That success, however, was not maintained over the months that followed and now it seems that Sony no longer has any plans to turn the standalone title into a franchise. Even though the game was not as successful as the publisher had hoped it would be, it still managed to curate a passionate fanbase that wants to see sequels to Days Gone. One of the game’s developers recently gave his take on why Sony may continue to hold its ground on this front despite the growing outcry from fans.

News site IGN reported on a recent interview where Days Gone creative director John Garvin discussed many topics about the title with God of War’s creator David Jaffe on the latter’s YouTube show. In the interview, Garvin encouraged players to buy games they want sequels to at full price. He did acknowledge this is not necessarily practical with titles that players aren’t quite confident in, but Garvin went on to say that games which do better at launch tend to be better sequel material in the eyes of both the developer and publisher.

“I do have an opinion on something that your audience may find of interest, and it might piss some of them off. If you love a game, buy it at f****** full price. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen gamers say ‘yeah, I got that on sale, I got it through PS Plus, whatever’.”

Garvin went on to compare the initial success of God of War with that of Days Gone. Despite doing well initially, Days Gone did not manage to keep pace in terms of sales numbers with God of War, allowing the latter to remain at launch price for far longer than the former. Now that the action-adventure survival horror title is coming to PC, however, perhaps an opportunity is presenting itself for fans to change Sony’s mind with their wallets.

Days Gone is a curious case in the gaming landscape. Despite not doing well at launch, it has managed to develop a surprisingly large and passionate fanbase in the past two years. It seems like the mediocre reviews at launch stalled the game for a while, but the massive uptick in gaming worldwide caused by the COVID-19 pandemic allowed initially hesitant players the time to give it a try. It will be interesting to see if Sony considers changing its stance on a Days Gone sequel now that the support for the game is much stronger.
