Warning: This article contains spoilers for Future State: Superman of Metropolis #1.

Fans know that Earth’s sun imbues Kryptonians like Superman with incredible powers and abilities the likes of which few heroes can match. Similarly, it’s common knowledge that, despite these amazing gifts, Kryptonians all possess the same crippling weaknesses to Kryptonite. While there are many different versions of Kryptonite, the most famous is by far Green Kryptonite. Whichever form of the matter a Kryptonian is exposed to has a different effect (some being positive). While many might have differing opinions on which variety affects Kryptonians the most severely, the general consensus has always been that no other substance can debilitate these aliens like Kryptonite can. At least not until Future State: Superman of Metropolis #1.

Written by Sean Lewis and drawn by John Timms, Superman of Metropolis introduces a syndicate known as Trojan that created mass hysteria in Metropolis by unleashing Brain Cells, an entity with artificial intelligence. At first, the worst thing this massive grinning orb could do was control humans who foolishly installed Trojan technology into their skin. But the real threat was revealed by Supergirl’s rather extreme – and especially violent – reaction towards how Superboy decided to sever the connection between Brain Cells and the people of Metropolis.

Sure, one can justify her anger, as Superboy’s solution involved shrinking and encasing the entire city in a small dome. But when she lands a blood-inducing uppercut to Superboy’s jaw before unleashing a fury of attacks, it starts getting a tad out of hand. It appeared as though Brain Cells’ other ability was successfully coaxing heroes into beating the hell out of each other.

As Supergirl goes to town on Superboy for how he tried to save Metropolis, Brain Cells strangely adopts a cheerleader-like role by consistently agreeing with and egging on Supergirl’s frustration. It gets to the point where Superboy begins to wonder what his ulterior motives are (especially since the AI lit up the moment Supergirl appears). Turns out, Brain Cells has been actively exacerbating an effect that his design automatically has on Kryptonians. Specifically, Brain Cells consists of biowiring that’s connected to a Nirodhium core. Nirodhium, as Brain Cells reveals, is so deadly to Kryptonians that their minds and bodies naturally unlock a survival mode that automatically makes them more aggressive.

Could Nirodhium prove to be a more effective weapon against Superman than Kryptonite? The most deadly variety that shares the most in common with Nirodhium is the Black Kryptonite that Batman created when corrupted by the Joker in Dark Nights. What exactly Kryptonians’ survival mode instincts are protecting them from remains unclear, but it’s intense enough to cause pretty severe reactions, ones that Green Kryptonite doesn’t even excite.
