When you adapt comic book properties to television or film, there is a lot that comes with it. From superheroes, super-villains, costumes, powers and of course some of those iconic romances. When it comes to DC Comics TV shows, several of those properties have either introduced the iconic couples from the source material or created new romances.

As we’ve come a long way with over 10 superhero shows from DC, a lot of romances have come and gone throughout the years. Many of these couples have gone through several ups and downs in their respective series. With that said, these are our 10 top couples on DC TV both past and present romances.

10 Nate Heywood & Amaya Jiwe (Legends of Tomorrow)

One of the genuinely strong romances that came to life on Legends of Tomorrow was between Nate Heywood (Nick Zano) and Amaya Jiwe a.k.a. Vixen (Maisie Richardson-Sellers.) The story about two heroes from two different times began in the second season when Amaya left her time period to join the Legends for a bit.

As lovely as they were together, their biggest obstacle was time itself in the end. In order to make sure Amaya’s legacy continues, the past Vixen eventually had to return to her timeline which sadly marked as the end of this particular romance.

9 Roy Harper & Thea Queen (Arrow)

One of the younger couples we had in the Arrowverse was Arrow’s Roy Harper (Colton Haynes) and Thea Queen (Willa Holland) whose romance began in an unusual way. Who knew that Roy stealing Thea’s purse would be the beginning of young complicated love.

It’s a classic love about two people from two different worlds who eventually would be sitting in the same boat as future superheroes. While their relationship definitely had its complications, these two were meant for one another. Whether they’re end game or not once Arrow comes to an end remains to be seen.

Legends of Tomorrow Season 3 became a game-changer for Sara Lance (Caity Lotz) when Ava Sharpe (Jes Macallan) entered her life. They got off to a literal rocky start as the Time Bureau didn’t approve of the Waverider’s time-traveling methods.

But with time, Sara and Ava fell in love and thus began one of the show’s best romances, if not the best one. Whether they are sharing a powerful kiss or protecting the timeline, creating this couple is one of the best decisions the show has ever made.

7 Anissa Pierce & Grace Choi (Black Lightning)

Over on Black Lightning, the series wasted no time introducing Anissa Pierce (Nafessa Williams) and Grace Choi (Chantal Thuy) to one another at the start of the show. In the comics, the two superheroes are an item. Over the course of these two seasons, their relationship has taken a couple of ups and downs.

Even though they haven’t fully become a committed couple, the journey towards that destination is what’s so fascinating. The chemistry between Williams and Thuy is so strong to watch that even if takes a while for them to become endgame, it’ll be worth it.

6 Bruce Wayne & Selina Kyle (Gotham)

DC TV Ranking the Top Couples (Past And Present)

Viewed as one of the most complicated power couples in DC Comics, Gotham honored that with their version of Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) and Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova.) Throughout the 5-year journey, we saw the complicated journey between the future Batman and Catwoman both on their good and bad days.

One thing was always made clear about these two that no matter what happens, they’ll always find their way back to one another. Even in the flash-forward where Bruce and Selina, as adults, reunite, one can tell that these two lovebirds will be doing this dance for a long time.

5 Joe West & Cecile Horton (The Flash)

One of the romances that came to life that was a lovely surprise was between Joe West (Jesse L. Martin) and Cecile Horton (Danielle Nicolet) on The Flash. The more we saw them together, the more you fell in love with Joe and Cecile as a couple.

One of the best things the show ever did was to bring Cecile into the larger story. Any good superhero show needs a strong parental figure or two which we now have with Joe and Cecile. The only question that remains now about these two is when will they finally get married?!

4 Jefferson Pierce & Lynn Stewart (Black Lightning)

Something that became perfectly clear in the Black Lightning pilot was the tricky love story between Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) and Lynn Stewart (Christine Adams.) Initially separated, the two eventually began finding their way back to each other.

As their lives in Freeland keeps getting more complicated, their journey of re-discovering their love has been beautiful to follow. It didn’t even take half a season for them to become the show’s power couple thanks to Williams and Adams’s electrifying chemistry.

3 Oliver Queen & Felicity Smoak (Arrow)

DC TV Ranking the Top Couples (Past And Present)

The love story of Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) and Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards) on Arrow has been a long one, to say the least. Starting out as partners, Oliver and Felicity have been through a lot in the last seven years. But over the course of the series, a romance came to life between the two which has been part of the show’s DNA going forward.

Felicity grounds Oliver just as much as he grounds her. Despite the many threats they have faced together, it became clear that these two would not go down easily. While the romance started shake-y, the last two seasons have been the couple’s strongest ones, despite the heartbreaking ending in the Season 7 finale.

2 Barry Allen & Iris West-Allen (The Flash)

DC TV Ranking the Top Couples (Past And Present)

Since The Flash pilot, two things were made very clear about Barry Allen (Grant Gustin): he’s the fastest man alive and that Iris West (Candice Patton) was the love of his life. The series set everything upright to make it believable that these two were each other’s soulmates, adapting one of DC’s most iconic romances.

Seeing the two of them go from best friends to power couple will forever be one of the best journeys on The Flash. Given the nature of the series, fans have been able to see the two of them go through so much from time travel obstacles, formidable foes and so much more. But together they run as one which is why their love continues to be one of the beating hearts in the series as well as the strongest romance in the Arrowverse.

1 Clark Kent & Lois Lane (Smallville)

Even though Smallville went off the air years ago, Clark Kent (Tom Welling) and Lois Lane (Erica Durance) is still one of the best modern interpretations of the legendary couple. For over six seasons, the Superman prequel drama gave fans their longest journey on-screen with Lois and Clark finding each other.

Even though Lois may have popped up a bit sooner in Clark’s life compared to the comics, it still doesn’t take away the epic saga that was their relationship. What Welling and Durance did together for all those years, as their characters, makes them the top DC TV couple to this day.
