Warning! Spoilers for Infinite Frontier #5 by DC Comics below

To protect the Multiverse from a group of villains who made a deal with Darkseid to protect Earth-0, President Superman just recreated an iconic Man of Steel moment. In Infinite Frontier #5, Darkseid emerges as the greatest heroes from across the Multiverse begin an epic battle to save all realities. However, when Calvin Ellis’ Superman gets tied up in chains, he manages to break through them, paying homage to one of the greatest Superman moments of all time.

Superman has struck many iconic poses over the years. Some of his most iconic covers include racing the Flash in Superman #199, fighting Muhammad Ali in Superman vs. Muhammad Ali, opening his shirt and revealing his iconic emblem in Man of Steel #1, or lifting a car to save lives in his debut issue in Action Comics #1. One of his most classic covers comes from Superman #233. On the front of the issue, Superman is shown breaking through chains. The striking Neal Adams cover has become one of the most beloved and iconic Superman covers ever and has been homaged countless times since originally appearing in 1971. Now, President Superman is getting his own take on the cover as he breaks through chains in Infinite Frontier #5.

In Infinite Frontier #5 by Joshua Williamson, Paul Pelletier, Jesus Merino, Tom Derenick, Norm Rapmund, Raul Fernandez, Hi-Fi, and Tom Napolitano, President Superman and the Justice Incarnate are left dealing with Machinehead’s betrayal and Psycho Pirate unleashing his own Injustice Incarnate at the team. The villains initially chain up Calvin Ellis, but upon seeing the Justice Society of America in trouble, he breaks free from them, recreating the iconic Superman #233 cover.

Machinehead immediately confronts President Superman, revealing that the Flash’s actions in Flashpoint had devastating effects across the Multiverse, including Earth-8. Unfortunately, the heroes (including Ellis) are chained up again as Psycho-Pirate reveals Earth-Omega is a prison world that Darkseid controls. But, Roy Harper uses his Black Lantern ring to free his fellow heroes, leading to Darkseid returning and putting the former Red Arrow into chains.

Calvin Ellis breaking free from the chains on Earth-Omega is a fun way to homage one of the most classic Superman covers ever. However, President Superman will need to break free from even stronger chains now that Darkseid has returned. Can President Superman and the Multiverse’s greatest heroes stop Darkseid before it’s too late? Readers will find out more soon, as Infinite Frontier #5 by DC Comics is in comic book stores now.
