DCs New Superboy Just Discovered His Devastating Secret Origin

Warning: contains spoilers for Suicide Squad 2021 Annual #1!

In Suicide Squad 2021 Annual #1, the truth about Amanda Waller’s new Superboy is finally revealed. While Conner Kent’s inclusion on the Suicide Squad created concerns that Superboy’s arc from Brian Michael Bendis’ recent Superman run was being immediately thrown out, it turns out that there have been two Superboys flying around in DC’s new Infinite Frontier era. Waller’s Conner Kent is actually a mostly forgotten DC character subjected to her dark experimentation (including the kryptonite device that keeps him under her thumb.)

At the beginning of DC’s latest Suicide Squad series, Waller had Conner Kent in her custody and he had no idea how he got there. Thanks to the Future State event, a potential future was revealed where Conner Kent is forced to become Waller’s full-fledged Superman of Earth-3 after she takes a team to save that world, calling them her Justice Squad. Conner has been running missions for Waller with that future seemingly looking as though it could indeed come to pass. However, Conner learned in recent issues that Waller messed with his mind, picking and choosing what he could and couldn’t remember. Additionally, Waller was desperate to get her Superboy some sort of “medicine” she claimed he needed after a taxing brawl with Earth-3’s Ultraman. However, that was right before the real Conner Kent, aka Superboy, arrived, raising the question of who the mysterious Kryptonian on Waller’s team actually is.

Now, Suicide Squad 2021 Annual #1 from Robbie Thompson, Eduardo Pansica, Julio Ferreira, and Dexter Soy sees the original Superboy putting the pieces together, despite the Squad Superboy’s determination that he is the genuine article. Unfortunately, without his “medicine,” Waller’s Conner Kent starts to deteriorate and his true self is revealed: rather than being a brand new Superboy clone, this Conner Kent is actually an old clone who eventually took on the name Match, being a Bizarro-esque copy of Conner created by the evil organization known as the Agenda (who was also a part of Deathstroke’s version of Titans East).

While Match is still in denial, the truth is confirmed when they discover that Waller has sent the Squad to a black site filled with Superboy clones created by the Agenda. It seems as though Waller was in control of this black site, and the medicine she wanted Match to take was a serum that made him look and sound more like the original Conner Kent. Not only is this a major reveal that brings back a past DC character who hasn’t been seen for years, but it’s also yet more proof that Amanda Waller is just as terrible as any villain, manipulating Match and masking his true nature as a corrupted copy of Superboy.

While this will massively change Match’s dynamic with the Suicide Squad and Waller, it’s a relief for many fans to see that the real Conner Kent is free to live his life and have new adventures as part of Superman’s family, rather than being immediately torn from his new status quo. Match clearly doesn’t deserve what’s happening to him, but the possibility of him becoming Earth-3’s Superman has now taken on new context, given this would actually be a fresh start (rather than simply an unwilling transplant, as it would have been for the real Conner.) The truth about the Suicide Squad and its Superboy has finally been revealed, and it’s going to be incredibly interesting to see what happens next now that Match’s true self has come to light.
