DCs New Superman & Marvels New SpiderMan Have The Same Weakness

Warning: contains spoilers for Amazing Spider-Man #78.BEY!

Both Marvel and DC have updated their premiere heroes Spider-Man and Superman; new characters now wear the cape and mask, but they share the same devastating weakness. Both characters are extremely powerful and have a reputation for working through pain and can even survive death (admittedly, most comic book heroes have the same ability). But in Amazing Spider-Man #78.BEY, the new Spider-Man reveals he shares the exact same weakness as the Man of Steel.

The Amazing Spider-Man series is currently undergoing a major overhaul; Peter Parker’s classic bad luck has landed him in bed with deadly radiation poisoning, and Ben Reilly has taken his place as Marvel’s new official Spider-Man. As a member of the Beyond Corporation, Ben has his own support staff, including a training center reminiscent of the X-Men’s mutant training area, the Danger Room. Unlike Peter Parker, Ben Reilly must report to training whenever he’s called, and as a Beyond employee, can no longer choose his own battles.

At the beginning of the issue, Spider-Man has just finished a training sequence with a very busy haunted-house theme, and he ultimately failed the scenario. Ben Reilly knows exactly what happened – his Spider-Sense became overloaded. “…With enough threats to keep it going off all the time, I can get blindsided.” Ben Reilly may not know it, but that’s the exact weakness of Jonathan Kent, the son of Clark Kent and DC’s new Superman.

In Superman: Son of Kal-El #5, the evil President Bendix blasts Superman was a massive burst of energy. This causes Superman to become overpowered, and at first, all is well; he can move even faster and lift heavier objects. But he can’t block out his senses the way he used to; he hears and sees everything around him and his superior senses are out of control. Only Jay Nakamura, Superman’s new boyfriend, can help him tune out the voices with noise-cancelling headphones until the power burst subsides. This means that, similarly to the sensitive Daredevil, both Superman and Spider-Man have weaknesses in the form of overstimulating their hearing and vision.

Superman’s enemies clearly know how to exploit said weakness, but Spider-Man’s situation is even worse: his friends know how to stop him in his tracks should he ever go rogue against the company. The Beyond Corporation has shown their sinister colors, especially when they considered allowing Ben to become a vampire in the name of acquiring more power. Superman and Spider-Man’s senses are great assets, but they can also be terrible vulnerabilities.
