Dead by Daylight Which Survivors Should You Level Up First
Dead by Daylight: Which Survivors Should You Level Up First?
Dead by Daylight’s asymmetrical horror pits Survivors against brutal Killers — but which Survivor should players level up first?

Developed by Behaviour Interactive, Dead by Daylight is a cross-platform four-versus-one asymmetrical horror game initially released in 2016. One player takes on the role of a brutal and sometimes sadistic Killer, while the other four players take on the roles of Survivors trying desperately to escape death. Since its release, Dead by Daylight has accumulated approximately 30 Survivors as both original characters and licensed characters from other media such as Resident Evil and Left 4 Dead.
In the Steam edition, players begin the base game with seven of these 30 Survivors: Dwight Fairfield, Meg Thomas, Claudette Morel, Jake Park, William “Bill” Overbeck, David King, and Nea Karlsson. Each Survivor has three unique perks that encapsulate their characters and their ideal play style. Once Survivors reach a certain level, their perks become teachable. Due to the sheer number of Survivors available, players can find it challenging to decide which characters and their perks are more useful to unlock. However, especially among the starter Survivors, there are characters and perks that work best for all play styles.
Meg Thomas’ Sprint Burst Makes Escaping the Killer Easy
Out of all the starter Survivors, Meg Thomas possesses perks that are some of the best in the game. Meg’s three unique perks are “Quick and Quiet,” “Sprint Burst,” and “Adrenaline.” Despite all three unique perks being brilliant for both new and veteran players in their own right, two stand out as essential for any Survivor build.
“Sprint Burst” allows the Survivor to break into a sprint at 150 percent of normal Running Movement speed for three seconds. This causes the Exhausted status effect for 60, 50, and 40 seconds at Common, Rare, and Very Rare tiers, respectively. “Sprint Burst” cannot be used when in the Exhausted status effect. It can be unlocked as a teachable perk by reaching level 35 with Meg. “Sprint Burst” is fantastic for putting distance between the Survivor and Killer, making it more effective than many other perks to escape chases, move between loopable objects, and reach fellow Survivors with ease.
Upon reaching level 40 with Meg, players will unlock Meg’s “Adrenaline” perk. With this perk, players are able to instantly heal by one Health State once the Exit Gates have been opened. It also combines with the “Sprint Burst” mechanic, so the Survivor will sprint at 150 percent of their normal running speed for five seconds. Due to “Adrenaline,” Survivors in the Dying State have a chance of escape by switching to the Injured State. If they are lucky enough to be close to an Exit Gate when “Adrenaline” is activated, Survivors can rush to the gate and secure an easy escape.
Save Your Allies With Bill Overbeck’s “Borrowed Time”
William “Bill” Overbeck is the first externally licensed character. Bill’s perks, “Left Behind,” “Borrowed Time,” and “Unbreakable,” have left a lasting impression on players. Each perk pertains to his past as a soldier and apocalypse survivor.
Out of the three, “Borrowed Time” is the single perk that players should aspire to unlock. “Borrowed Time” is an essential perk to run for any altruistic player as it grants a buff to fellow Survivors. For 8, 10, and 12 seconds — for Common, Rare, and Very Rare tiers, respectively — after unhooking a Survivor, the unhooked Survivor is protected by the Endurance status effect. Any damage taken by the unhooked Survivor that would put them into the Dying State instead triggers the Deep Wound effect. They then have 20 seconds to heal themselves. However, taking further damage while in the Deep Wound status will put the Survivor into the Dying State. The Survivor can also trigger the Dying State if they do not heal themselves within the 20-second time limit.
“Borrowed Time” is a great perk, especially when getting used to the unhook mechanic and how Killers will react to it. It gives both Survivors a buff and, if the unhooking happens after the Exit Gates are opened, it can provide an ideal opportunity to escape.
Jake Park’s “Iron Will” Helps Hide From the Killer While Injured
Despite him being known as the Saboteur, Jake Park’s perks make it easy for Survivors to traverse the map and evade the Killer while injured. His three unique perks are “Iron Will,” “Calm Spirit,” and “Saboteur.”
When reaching level 30 with Jake, players can unlock “Iron Will,” which allows Survivors to reduce the volume of their grunts of pain by 50, 70, and 100 percent of Common, Rare, and Very Rare perk tiers, respectively. This perk may seem simple, but it significantly helps new and veteran Survivors evade the Killer while injured and give ample opportunity to find a fellow Survivor to heal them. Pair this with stealth perks such as Meg’s “Quick and Quiet,” and Survivors are well on their way to staying hidden from the Killer and making a stealthy escape.
Dodge the Killer’s Attacks with David King’s “Dead Hard”
David King is available in the free DLC, A Lullaby for the Dark, which has been added to the base game. David King’s unique perks are “We’re Gonna Live Forever,” “Dead Hard,” and “No Mither.”
One of the most sought-after perks in the game is “Dead Hard,” which becomes teachable to other Survivors upon reaching level 35 with David King. When injured, “Dead Hard” lets players tap into their adrenaline bank and dash forward to quickly avoid the Killer’s attacks. However, like “Sprint Burst,” “Dead Hard” causes the Exhausted status effect for 60, 50, or 40 seconds, and it cannot be used when in the Exhausted status effect. “Dead Hard” is a perk that has been used for all play styles and by new and veteran players alike. Its mechanic allows for Survivors to quickly and efficiently evade damage while stalling the Killer for a few seconds to escape.
