Deadpool 3 Is Marvels Only RRated Project In Development

Deadpool 3 is Marvel’s only R-rated movie in development, says Kevin Feige. The cinematic world that would come to be known as the MCU kicked off with 2008’s Iron Man, and later grew into the biggest franchise in the cosmos. Of course the MCU had a huge advantage from the start, given Marvel comics’ incredibly deep roster of characters, including Captain America, Thor, The Hulk and many others.

But obviously not ALL of Marvel’s most famous characters were available to the MCU right off the bat, as rights issues kept certain comic book mainstays like the X-Men off the table. The last of those inconvenient rights issues were cleared up however when Disney went ahead and merged with Fox, making everyone from Wolverine to the Fantastic Four to Deadpool available for future MCU projects. Deadpool in particular seemed like a juicy character for the MCU to absorb, given the huge success of Fox’s two movies built around Ryan Reynolds’ take on the character. However, given the Deadpool movies’ R-rated tone, some worried family-oriented Disney taking on the character would only remove his edge. Those worries were seemingly put to rest however when Marvel Studios chief Feige confirmed that Deadpool 3 will be R-rated like its predecessors.

When news arrived that Disney would break with tradition and make an R-rated Deadpool movie, speculation began on the possibility the studio would look to adapt other adult-oriented Marvel titles as R-rated films. But apparently this is not yet happening, as Marvel Studios chief Feige indicates Deadpool 3 is the only R-rated film currently in development from the studio. Feige told the media from Wednesday’s TCA panel (via Alex Zalben), “We target everything we do now for kids and adults… Other than Deadpool that has established itself as a genre and rating.”

Feige’s statement that Deadpool 3 is the only R-rated Disney/Marvel film in development comes as obvious bad news for those who were hoping more adult-oriented Marvel fare was in the pipeline. The one big upcoming Marvel title with the potential to be an R-rated film is of course Blade, the reboot starring Mahershala Ali as the vampire hunter first played by Wesley Snipes. The original Blade movies all carried R ratings of course, mostly for their gory violence, and the hope was the reboot would carry on the tradition established with those films. Things could always change in the future of course, but for now it seems Blade will at most carry a PG-13 rating when it hits screens at some point in the future.

In addition to throwing cold water on fans who were hoping for a flat-out R-rated Blade reboot, Feige’s nugget also seemingly puts the damper on hopes of an R-rated Wolverine or Ghost Rider movie getting made at Disney. Of course a lot depends on how well Deadpool 3 performs when it arrives. Disney may love family-friendly storytelling, but it also loves money, and if Deadpool 3 does boffo box office it could convince the studio to pursue other R-rated comic book movies. Another possibility obviously would be for Disney to set up an entire separate banner under which to release more adult-oriented comic book films. With DC being willing to go very R-rated and dark with movies like Joker and Birds of Prey, it seems only logical for Marvel to find a way to keep pace with their own R-rated fare, preferably without sullying the good name of Disney in the process.
