Deadpool 3 Is The Only Good Way Hugh Jackmans Wolverine Can Appear In MCU

In order to make another appearance in the MCU, Hugh Jackman’s version of Wolverine has only one good option: antagonize Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) by appearing in Deadpool 3. Many Jackman fans are still torn over the ending of 2017’s Logan, in which Wolverine dies, putting to rest Jackman’s iconic portrayal, which began with 2000’s X-Men. Jackman’s legacy as Wolverine is undeniable, and while it’s difficult to imagine another actor pulling off a convincing Wolverine, many agree that it makes sense for Jackman to hang up the claws. That said, Deadpool 3 allows a compelling opportunity for Jackman to return to the MCU in a way that would feel both refreshing and distinctive from any of the MCU’s other X-Men plans.

It’s obvious that Reynolds and Jackman have natural chemistry and a significant portion of Deadpool 2’s promotional efforts went toward publicizing a mostly-pretend feud between Jackman and Reynolds. To help promote Deadpool 2, Jackman appeared in ads in which he offered begrudging praise for Reynolds. In 2019, the two actors appeared in a popular Youtube video wherein they attempt a truce by endorsing one another’s respective companies (Reynolds’ Aviation Gin, and Jackman’s Laughing Man Coffee). The segment concludes with a delightful re-escalation of the ongoing rivalry.

Both Deadpool and Deadpool 2 have already set up a litany of Wolverine jokes, including the moment in Deadpool when Wade unmasks himself for Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), only to reveal that he has tacked a Hugh Jackman photo over his actual face. Deadpool 2’s wildly popular post-credits scenes also set up the possibility of a Jackman appearance for Deadpool 3. During one particularly meta-heavy sequence, Wade Wilson time travels to a scene from X-Men Origins in order to execute himself before Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) has the chance. The scene is rife with dark humor, and Jackman’s intense, rugged Wolverine clashes perfectly with Reynolds’ clownish Deadpool. By sharing more screen time in Deadpool 3, Deadpool and Wolverine could emerge as a perfectly dysfunctional duo.

One reason Deadpool 2 succeeds is that Josh Brolin’s stone-faced Cable offers a superb “straight man” counterpoint to Reynolds’ motor-mouthed, irreverent Wade Wilson. Although Jackman’s Wolverine also doles out a fair share of sarcasm throughout the X-Men films, it’s likely that Wade is just the sort of character who will get on Wolverine’s nerves and bring out his inner curmudgeon. It’s easy to imagine a Deadpool 3 wherein Wolverine and Deadpool undermine one another with clever pranks and well-crafted verbal potshots since this is precisely what Jackman and Reynolds pretend to do in real life.

The Wolverine character will obviously need to be recast for future X-Men titles, since no amount of digital de-aging can turn Hugh Jackman into a convincing young Logan at this point. There are rumors that a future MCU Wolverine could be played by Richard Armitage, Charlie Hunnam, or even Jason Momoa. The motive behind reviving the Jackman Wolverine for Deadpool 3 wouldn’t be to contest these future iterations of Wolverine but to place Jackman’s classic, time-tested character in a very different (and far more comical) context. In this fashion, Deadpool 3’s take on Wolverine could be set up in a way that stands apart from any other Wolverine-themed MCU plans.

As of now, the fate of Deadpool 3 is uncertain, as the sequel is not included as part of the MCU’s Phase 4. 20th Century Fox sold the X-Men rights to Disney in 2019, and it’s not clear whether Disney will try to sanitize the Deadpool brand for a wider viewership or disavow the property entirely. For now, viewers are left hoping that Deadpool 3 can still happen. In any case, the movie will only be improved by bringing in Hugh Jackman, the man Ryan Reynolds loves to hate.
