Dear Evan Hansen Every Song Ranked Worst To Best

Stephen Chbosky’s adaptation of Dear Evan Hansen, based on the Broadway show of the same name, features a beautiful soundtrack. The 2021 movie cut several songs from the Broadway show and added a few new ones, but overall, the musical’s tone is not affected by these changes. The most iconic track from the musical remained, while some of the new songs are used to flesh out supporting characters.

The songs in Dear Evan Hansen are written by famous musical duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, whose other songwriting credits include La La Land and The Greatest Showman. While many of the songs in those musicals are more upbeat, Dear Evan Hansen features more heartfelt ballads. These slower tracks largely highlight the main character Evan, played Ben Platt, who reprises his Tony-award-winning role from the Broadway show.

The songs in Dear Evan Hansen are very likable; the melodies are catchy and many of them are fun to sing — even if the lyrics are often very sad. Fans of the musical will likely compare the performances in the movie to those on the original Broadway production, and while not every new song is an instant classic, the overall movie soundtrack does not disappoint. Here’s how each of the songs in the film rank, from worst to best.

11. “A Little Closer”

A tonally lighter song in the movie, “A Little Closer” is one of two songs written specifically for the Dear Evan Hansen film adaptation. Performed by Connor Murphy (Colton Ryan), the character who commits suicide, this song gives a little insight to the troubled high schooler and brings Evan some encouragement at the end of the film. While not bad, the new song in the movie soundtrack doesn’t rank as high as the others — it just isn’t as interesting or memorable as many of Dear Evan Hansen’s other tunes.

10. “Requiem”

Sung by Zoe, Larry, and Cynthia Murphy (Kaitlyn Dever, Danny Pino, and Amy Adams), “Requiem” highlights the vastly different ways in which the family processes Connor’s death. The mournful ballad shows the beginning effects of Evan’s lies to the Murphy family. Although the harmonies are nice, it’s not a song that will get stuck in the heads of many viewers.

9. “The Anonymous Ones”

“The Anonymous Ones” is another song that was written for the film, sung by the character Alana Beck (Amandla Stenberg). Alana is an over-achieving student who seems put-together on the outside, but in this song, she reveals to Evan that she secretly suffers through some of the same anxieties that he does. This new piece replaces a cut song from the musical (“Disappear”), and it is the better of the two new additions, adding a level of depth to a secondary character.

8. “For Forever”

“For Forever” is the kick-off to Evan’s lying spree in Dear Evan Hansen, when he makes up a story about himself and Connor over dinner with the Murphys. This song is deceptively light-hearted and hopeful, given the fact that the story it tells is simply a fantasy. It proves how desperately Evan has been searching for connections as he tells the story not only to comfort the Murphys but also begins to use Connor to portray himself in a different light.

7. “Words Fail”

“Words Fail” is Evan’s confession to the Murphy family about the many lies he built around their son’s memory. The most brutal song from the stage show, it lifts the illusions cast by Evan in “For Forever” and reveals just how much Evan dislikes himself, near to the point of suicide. Besides this crushing revelation, both this song and “For Forever” are static on-screen as both are solo ballads with little movement of camera or performers.

6. “Only Us”

A lovely duet between Evan and Zoe, “Only Us” is a piano ballad that will warm the hearts of anyone who has had a high-school sweetheart. It takes a few places down on this list because the film version of Dear Evan Hansen doesn’t set it up quite as well as in the musical, in which Evan and Zoe are already dating by the time this song is performed. In the film, it is used for Zoe to admit her feelings for Evan and comes off a little strong for both characters.

5. “You Will Be Found”

One of the most popular songs from the original musical version of Dear Evan Hansen, “You Will Be Found” is a message of hope given by Evan in a speech at a school assembly in memorial for Connor. When some students film Evan’s speech and upload the video to the internet, it goes viral and brings hope to many people who are experiencing loneliness. Like “For Forever,” the message is a little deceptive since it is rooted in Evan’s lies about Connor, but taken at face value, the song is a beautiful ensemble piece that will make listeners feel better on difficult days.

4. “Sincerely, Me”

The most upbeat song in the movie, “Sincerely, Me” is performed by Evan, his techie friend Jared Kleinman (Nik Dodani), and an imaginary version of Connor. In this song, Evan and Jared are writing fake e-mails from Connor to show to the Murphy family to keep up the charade that he and Evan were friends. This song is more dynamically staged and fun than most of the songs in the film, including a go-kart race and even a couple of dance moves.

3. “If I Could Tell Her”

Another cute duet between Zoe and Evan, this song comes earlier in the film when Evan is nursing a secret crush on Zoe. After telling Zoe that Connor used to talk about her all the time, Evan is forced to put his own thoughts about Zoe into Connor’s mouth. This song is very sweet and earnestly performed by Platt and Dever in the film.

2. “Waving Through A Window”

Another very popular song from the musical (receiving cover treatment from Katy Perry in the past), “Waving Through A Window” opens Dear Evan Hansen and introduces viewers to Evan’s overwhelming sense of isolation. The lyrics “On the outside always looking in/ will I ever be more than I’ve always been?” are heartbreaking to imagine coming from a teenager. The song contains big notes that feel good to belt in the shower, making this one of the most memorable numbers from the movie.

1. “So Big/So Small”

Although maybe not as popular and fun to sing as “Waving Through A Window”, “So Big/So Small” — belonging to Evan’s mother, Heidi (Julianne Moore) — is the most emotional song in the film. When comforting Evan after his confession to the Murphys, Heidi tells him a story about the day his father moved out of their house. A total tear-jerker, Heidi’s love for her son is beautifully expressed in this simple number and is well-performed by Moore in one of the very few musical performances for the actress, making it the best song featured in Dear Evan Hansen.
