WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Walking Dead Season 11, Episode 10, “New Haunts,” which aired Sunday, February 27th on AMC.

After months of waiting, The Walking Dead returned last week with the first episode of 11B, and it didn’t disappoint. After concluding a controversial Reapers story arc, the episode flashed six months forward and gave fans a glimpse of a coming feud between Maggie and Daryl. But, “New Haunts” pumped the breaks, and focused on what was happening 30 days after Daryl’s group arrived at the Commonwealth.

The episode opened with a Halloween celebration — complete with costumes, food, games and plenty of activities. It was a great way to show just how safe the Commonwealth was and how Daryl and company were trying to acclimate to their new lives. However, fans could tell that the festivities were bittersweet for Ezekiel. He got to see his friends experience safety once again, but he was clearly prepping for his own death. Here’s what happened in the episode and why there’s still hope that The Walking Dead won’t kill off the King.

Early in Season 10, Ezekiel developed thyroid cancer, and following that, his future looked bleak. Yet, he was determined to find help for his friends, so he went with Eugene to look for Stephanie. Along with Yumiko, they all found the Commonwealth. There, Ezekiel received medical attention, and during the latter part of 11A, he seemed to be on the mend. However, in “New Haunts,” fans discovered that his time was running out.

Although Ezekiel never admitted it, Carol could see that something wasn’t right with him. So, she did her usual detective routine and got some answers. By sneaking a look at his hospital records and talking with a doctor, Carol found out that Ezekiel was going to need surgery much sooner than the Commonwealth could provide it. To put it bluntly, the cancer was going to kill him if something didn’t dramatically change. Ezekiel didn’t explicitly know about the holdup with surgery, but he knew that he wasn’t doing well. He made a present out of Shiva’s collar, and gave it to Jerry’s son. He also gave Henry’s box to Carol. Those actions proved that he was trying to quietly settle his affairs and preparing to die.

All of that notwithstanding, Ezekiel is the last person that The Walking Dead should kill off. He has the best attitude of anyone on the series. Even knowing that his death was fast approaching, his focus was on “finding reasons to smile” and constantly making other people happy — just like he did his whole life. He’s the just the best, and he deserves a shot at seeing the other side of things, where he doesn’t have to fight all of the time. In the comics, he died during the Whisperer War, so he’s free to live to the end of the season if the writers choose that fate for him. Hopefully, they do because seeing his death would be demoralizing for fans.

However, there is a little bit of hope for him. After Carol learned about his negative prognosis, she got on Lance Hornsby’s good side. He might turn out to be a conniving, CRM loyalist, but Hornsby was also the one who could move Ezekiel up the surgery waitlist. Although she hasn’t accomplished her goal yet, hopefully she will. If anyone on The Walking Dead has deserved to live, it’s Ezekiel.
